SYNOPSIS
-
Mel carries Loo’s body into the streets where the
citizens of Versi are stunned. Loo’s mother hits her, but Mel takes it
and Urkonn tells her that he has something for her. He exclaims that
it’s a weapon and once he’s given it to her, Mel walks towards the crowd
and holds up the scythe. “I have something to say,” she states.
She tells them all that there’s been a murder and that everyone is in
danger. She tells them of the Lurks and claims that they’ll be coming
for them. Mel isn’t sure what she wants the people of Versi to do, but
she tells them that if they stand together then perhaps they can save
themselves from the unimaginable horror that’s coming. They’re not
having any of it.
Meanwhile, Harth tells his vampire followers of his plan: he’s leading
them straight into Hell. Or rather he’s bringing it home to them.
Elsewhere, the two spirits who commune with Urkonn discuss the
situation. One wants to send reinforcements, but the other claims that
the portal has already been breached and that Mel will have to do.
Melaka is annoyed with the lack of cooperation on the people’s part. She
plans to find Harth, but hears something. Sneaking into a part of a
building, she finds Lurks feeding on a girl. She wields the scythe with
incredible ease and slays the creatures, experiencing the dusting
process for the first time. Reeling in her victory, she’s taking
unawares by more Lurks. One Lurk knocks the scythe into the river, and
Mel dives in after it. She finally defeats the Lurks and Urkonn is
impressed. Harth is not.
Elsewhere, Erin explains Harth’s plan to her colleagues. They’re not
convinced and Erin thinks that despite her sister’s claims, Mel has lost
it.
Harth is distraught that Mel has finally claimed her Slayer powers. He
sends Icarus after her, but he wants the body.
In Versi, Mel proves that the Lurks are demons. She tells the people
that they’re coming and that they can be defeated. She wants the word to
be spread, but then Icarus turns up, reading for a fight. Mel smiles,
and she raises her scythe with no fear at all.
TRIVIA
-
The scythe is first seen in this issue. As Urkonn
explains: "It was a weapon. Forged eons ago, for the Slayer alone. Lost
for centuries." Urkonn tells Mel to carry it, "for it is your sword and
your sceptre. Let it proclaim you are the hero and the monster that you
need to be."
