SYNOPSIS
-
Melaka is well aware of the demon lurking behind
her, and he lunges for her without hesitation. He refers to himself as
Urkonn of the D'Avvrus. She zaps him with a laser and puts it down for
the count. However, as soon as she tries to catch a breather, Urkonn
wakes and plunges them both out of a window. As they fall, Fray
continues to fight, until Urkonn tells her that he’s not trying to kill
her.
Urkonn tells her that he was simply trying to halt her flight. He claims
that he has been sent to train her and that she is the Chosen One,
destined to lead humankind in war against the vampires. Fray is
unimpressed. “What’s a vampire?” she asks.
Meanwhile, a vampire named Icarus is feeding from a girl. Two minions
approach him with the stolen amulet and Icarus elects to take it do
their leader. As he walks away, the minions talk about Icarus’ past
glory and how he’s nothing but a lackey now. Icarus overhears and exerts
his power over the minions by making one bite his own finger off.
By now, Mel has figured out that Urkonn is referring to Lurks. She
doesn’t believe a word the demon has said. Trying to prove his point,
Urkonn tells her of her supposed dreams about past Slayers, but Mel
claims never to have dreamt anything like that.
On patrol, Erin is fuming at Mel’s attitude to her. It becomes clear
that Erin and Mel are sisters, and Erin is concerned that she will lose
her sister to the dark side. In Versi, Loo is trying to convince her
friends that Mel is a hero and is cool. She tells her friends that Mel
is a thief and that sells it to them.
Unfortunately, in her apartment, Fray is not buying it. She doesn’t care
about the Lurks, but Urkonn tells her that they’ll eventually overrun
the world. Suddenly a device that’s travelled across Haddyn comes
through the window and Mel catches it. She calls it a ‘carrier pigeon’
and it means that she’s been summoned for a job. She elects to leave
Urkonn and take the gig, telling him to get another plan. When she’s
left, Urkonn points out that there’s another plan, but she won’t like
it.
Mel is on her grab in the museum. She’s distracted by Urkonn’s claims,
but has to make the grab: a totem. Suddenly, an alarm goes off. She
realises that she didn’t do it, and finds a Lurk feasting on the guard.
It lunges for her and bites into her arm. She manages to overpower it
and throws him at a display case which shatters.
Escaping from the scene, Fray returns to Urkonn and asks him one
question: “What’s a Slayer?”
TRIVIA
-
If it wasn't noticeable before, Haddyn is indeed
New York - the Chrysler building is clearly seen in one shot.
-
Vampires in this time period are purple-skinned,
but that's something that all of the Buffy and Angel
comics have done in the past to distinguish them from human beings.
They're called Lurks in the future.
CONTINUITY
-
Mel keeps on having flashbacks to the boy from her
and Erin's past, a boy named Harth.
-
Urkonn is rather old and mentions computers and
bullets, both being terms that Fray is unfamiliar with.
-
Fray has a tattoo on her arm that looks similar to
Faith's.
