Internet Safety for Kids
By jaydsie

There are many reasons for our children to be allowed to explore the internet. The World Wide Web helps them to build lifelong learning skills, gain knowledge of other cultures, and offers resources to supplement their learning. However, with the many benefits of internet access there are also risks which we as parents need to protect our children from. These risks include predators who use the internet as a tool against children, and content on the internet which is not suitable for our children. By monitoring your child's online activities and setting some family rules you can ensure that your child has safe online experiences.

Don't just sign your child up with AOL or Yahooligans and let them surf. Put the computer in a common area so that you can supervise your child's online activates. Check the History file on your Browser to see what sites your child has visited. Help your child to assess the value of the information that they encounter. Use filtering software such as cyber patrol to be sure that your children are being protected even when you cannot be in the room, and set tools such as Yahoo Messenger to accept IMs from people on their buddy list only.

Children also need to have rules monitoring their online activity. Some good examples are:

1. DON'T give out personal information such as their name, school, address, phone number, picture, or credit card numbers.

2. NEVER plan face-to-face meetings ALONE with online acquaintances.

3. Let a parent know IMMEDIATELY if they come across any content that makes them feel uncomfortable.

By setting rules and supervising our children's online time, we can make the internet a safe place for our children to visit.
