when i got to montserrat I raced up the stairs (why must they always be long and steep?) to the basilica to catch the choir singing Salve Regina y Virolai. The church was packed to the gills! i had to stand outside the gates next to the big cylinders of holy water almost as tall as I am just so i could catch a glimpse between gate bars. the boy's choir is made up of 50 prepubescent boys (couldn�t help thinking about the catholic priest scandal) which i guess explains why they sing so high. The basilica, courtyard and the grounds were amazing. I'm glad I wore comfortable shoes - the hills are pretty steep and one has to hike to be awarded with amazing views of the countryside. |

I took a day trip outside Barcelona to Montserrat - home to the Benedictine monks, the Black Virgin (La Moreneta) and the famous Escolania boy's choir tucked high in the jagged mountain side. there was this girl from china sitting across from me on the train and a couple from london next to me. it's always interesting to hear about other people's travels. |

on my way home, i got off at the wrong stop and had to wait an hour to catch the last train - it had to happen eventually!! turns out the same chinese girl also missed her train so we stopped at the cafe and chatted awhile. She�s a teacher and her husband couldn�t join her on vacation. Because her accent is kinda thick she kept calling me SEX-rita ... SEX for short ... outloud and often! After a while she asked if that bothered me. Only when I get lewd stares from perverted old men but otherwise, vale! |

She also showed me a map of where she wanted to go. Since I went OCD on the itinerary, I was able to offer advice on where to go, how long it would take, the best routes, and what to expect. This russian family overheard me talking so they too asked me questions about the best places to go for the two hours they had left. I was playing tour guide and loved it!!! |
