Materials Required:

o               pressed dried flowers or leaves

o               gerbera cut outs

o               ivory coloured candles

o               PVA Glue

o               Tin of Wax in pan of boiling water

Suggested Order:

Melt the Wax before 9:30am.

On arrival (say 9:30am – 10am)

Apply the glue to the backs of the flowers and/or leavesPosition the flowers or leaves on the candles. Press with fingers to secure into place.  Using a wet paper towel, wipe off any excess glue. Allow the glue to dry.

Morning Tea and discussion topic (say 10 - 10:45am)

Using pliers pick up each candle by the wick and dip the candle completely into the heated Wax to 'seal' the flowers. Use a Bamboo skewer to press any lifting lead stems back into the cooling wax.

Dip each candle a second time and cool on wax paper.

Further Notes from questions about this craft:

For heating the wax

We placed the wax into an empty, clean formula tin and then placed the tin into a stock pot of boiling water on the stove.  A smaller tin and pot could be used for fewer, smaller candles.  It took about 30mins for the wax to completely melt.  Try not to have the wax too hot or it forms a very thin layer on the candle also try not to let it get too cold or it will set in ridges on the candle as it is lowered into the wax and raised back out.  If you don’t have a stove at MOPs maybe someone will have a camp cooker you could use.  Try this one at home first so you have a feel for it.

Pressed Flowers & Gerbera Cut Outs

We pressed the flowers before the craft.  Everyone on the committee did a few.  We advertised the craft a month beforehand and suggested the Mums press some flowers/leaves.  We put some basic instructions in the newsletter.  To press flowers - place the leaves/flowers between paper towels under a heavy book for at least 2 weeks.  Many mums did bring flowers and shared them around.

The Gerberas were printed onto paper.  On the first attempt at home the gerberas faded after dripping – possibly the wax was too hot.  All other candles with gerberas went fine but we didn’t have the wax quite so hot.
