The Egyptian theatre is a restored 1929 movie palace located in DeKalb, IL. It still serves as originally designed by hosting touring live performances, running second run art films on the weekends (when no live performances are booked), and is home to many local arts groups. I came to the Egyptian while still in high school as a volunteer. I learned stagecraft from Dr. Walter Dewey, professor emeritus from Northern Illinois University. I continued to volunteer at the theatre while I was in college and held various titles including assistant technical director. I was appointed to the theatre's board of directors while I pursued my degree in arts administration, and continued in that position until I went to the Goodman theatre. I was offered the position of Operations Manager in Sept. of 1995. This was a paid position that was created by combining 3 different positions. I served as the theatre technical director, projectionist, and operations manager. I was responsible for the day to day operations of the building, all stage concerns, and the operation and maintenance of a 1954 carbon arc 35 mm projector. I spent 2 years in this position, and during that time was instrumental in contract negotiations, and implemented the theatre's first computerized box-office.
