Do's and Don'ts For Your New Puppy or Dog
If you have purchased a Puppy from us, or are soon to buy (invest in) a quality animal from us, you will get a Puppy that has been raised in a home, with lots of love, attention and has been handled and acclimated to humans. All puppies have been fed a routine diet of Pro-Plan foods and have had constant and regular veterinary care. We take great care of our animals and their environment, as well as guarding against threats (physical or bacterial) to either their health or their environments which they frequent. We hope and encourage you to STRONGLY do the same with your new Puppy. Choose your Breeder wisely before you buy any Puppy. #1 - DO TAG, LABEL AND COLLAR YOUR ANIMAL FIRST THING. ...maybe even consider MICRO-CHIPPING your new pet. DO get your Puppy to the Vet within 72-hours after purchase/pick-up to establish a baseline as required by our contract, or risk default of contract/guarantee, and forfeiture of AKC registration / paperwork. DO SECURE YOUR YARD and/or FENCE & GATES. Plug every hole you see. DO Love your Puppy very much, in the beginning and always. DO Feed your Puppy PREMIUM FOOD. Please don't feed cheap junk. We recommend Pro-Plan puppy food for 1-year, then change to adult formula. DO get a Licenced Veterinarian for your Purebred Animal. DO make regular visits to your Vet when the dog is required to. DO know where the TWO (2) closest 24-hr Animal Hospital's are. DO set up or start a First-Aid Kit for your doggy and/or pets. DO get and continue to get Regular Shots for your Animal. DO understand that Puppies chew and need chew toys. DO keep them COOL (or indoors) WHILE IT'S HOT, or build him/her/them an Air-Conditioned Dog-House. And keep them warm while it's cold. DO give them plenty of COOL water to drink. DO get a book on Dachshund's and read about your breed (see Links). DO brush your Puppy/Dog's Teeth. Not a laughing matter. DO pick-up "poopies" regularly. Clean yards are healthy yards. DO keep stray animals AWAY from your animal. They can carry many deadly diseases that you may not know about until too late.
Don't leave puppy outside, unattended or TIED-out. Excessive heat or cold can kill a dog or Puppy, especially a Dachshund, due to their thin coats. Hypothermia works against animals too. Don't be cruel to your new best friend. Nor do you want your animal to escape or worse, be stolen, or picked up by animal control or attacked by another animal. If you are buying a puppy for your convenience and ultimately will be TIED-OUT or ignored - please don't buy one from us. Don't leave Puppy outside - OWL's, HAWK's EAGLE's and other preditory birds see your little pup from far away as the size of a rat, mouse, rabbit or other woodland creature that they consider FOOD. Don't set yourself up for sorrow, and DON'T think this can't happen. It has happened to one of our customers and it was tragic for them to witness. Not to mention that human's pose the particular threat of stealing your new family member while your back is turned. Don't feed your animal SWEETS, SUGAR, CHOCOLATE or other human "sweet treats". I had a coworker buddy feed his Non-Dachshund pet "Krispy Kreme" Donuts, with banana & other fillings, plus some other stuff - all because it was his dog's birthday. It's good to celebrate, but please do so with the animal and/or its digestive system in mind. Treats like veggies, high quality dog biscuits, flavored rawhides, or something that is pet related. Then go to the park, walk or other "fun activity" to interact with your furry best friend. Just to recap - Krispy Kreme for humans (mmm, mmm good), and none for doggy. Okay? Okay. Don't feed your Puppy/Dog poor grade, cheap dog food. Most brands contain too many fillers, additives, colors, ash, toxins and such, that your dog's system will react with diarrhea and digestive problems like, gas, bloating, indigestion and regurgitation. Not to mention increasing the chances of a urinary tract infection/inflammation (UTI) or even kidney problems. Cheap foods must be fed in greater amounts to equal the vitamin and good caloric intake that a Premium Food will do in less quantity. And, less food in, less food out the other end, if you know what we mean :) Don't leave Puppy alone with children - PLEASE. Puppies are innocent and children are experimental and innocent in some ways too. The unsupervised combination of these two could lead to danger or a broken animal. An unsupervised child may play roughly with puppy or place puppy on a couch or furniture and leave. The puppy will want to follow and fall and likely break a bone - Don't allow this. Puppies are babies like children. Protect him/her more, because an animal can't say where it hurts. Don't make us say, "we told you so...". Don't put or leave a Puppy unattended on furniture, counter, table, sink, bed or other high place. If you are not going to allow Puppy on furniture when older, then don't start letting him/her think they can get up on a sofa or chair with you as a Puppy now, and not later as a regular "dog". Too many mixed signals. If you are going to train - train correctly NOW to achieve desired results later on. If not, you will have a confused and disobediant animal, which will NOT be the animal's fault - will it? Don't leave Puppy alone without something to occupy it, entertain it, or something to play music for it. If you have to go out, leave a radio or the TV on to break up the "dead silence" in a home. Make sure animal has proper chew toys before leaving. Otherwise, curiosity may get the best of the little guy and experiment on his own, and being alone will only build on "separation anxiety". Don't get puppy or dog in Salt Water - like the ocean, beach, inlet or seashore. Salt water can be detrimental and/or deadly to your animal. You may see other dogs and dog owners playing at the beach, but you really should NOT allow this. Most importantly, DO NOT ALLOW THE ANIMAL TO DRINK SALT WATER.
