    HISTORY

In 1945, representatives from over 50 different nations met to make plans for a world union. There plans became the United Nations, or UN for short. The UN was made to be "a general international organization" to maintain "peace and security."

President Roosevelt(FDR) of the United States made sure not to make the same mistakes Woodrow Wilson made (Wilson had tryed to create a League of Nations 26 years earlier).

Once in effect the UN did much for the world. It was even able to stop armed conflics. One of the first succeses was between India and Pakistan, which was in dispute over Kashmir.

    STRUCTURE

It is much like a Republic for the Earth. Every country in the United Nations pledges to have "faith in fundamental human rights," and to "live together as good neighbors." They also pledge to maintain "international peace and security."

At first the United States, China, France, Great Britain, and the USSR each had a permanent seat on the Security Council of 11 members. Now it is the United States, China, France, United Kingdom, and Russian Federation. There are also 15 members in the council now, instead of 11.

The 2 major branches of the United Nations are "The Economic and Social Council" and "The Military Staff Committee." Although the UN also helps in a variety of other fields, such as combating epidemics and stabilizing currencies.
