Denmark - Slovenia

Denmark - Slovenia 37 -20 (15 -8)

Denmark: Katrine Fruelund 7, Pernille Hansen 6, Mette Vestergaard 6, Anja Nielsen 5, Lotte Kiærskou 5, Christina Roslyng 4, Line Daugaard 2, Camilla Andersen 1, Tina Bøttzau 1.

Slovaka: Ingrid Hrckova 6, Martina Reisenbuchlerova 4, Kahriwo Mravikoua 3, Lucic Uhrakova 2, Annamaria Kovacsova 2, Jana Oboridova 2, Monika Ladinovo 1.

This victory qualifies us for the European Championship with an overall score of 63-40. Still, there is a long way before trainer Pytlick and players can feel comfortable - there are many problems to deal with. One is the fact that too many players are still injured and thus, the trainer does not have a stable team to work with.

After 16 months, Susanne Munk Lauritzen was back again as goal keeper - still a bit out of practice after her 16 months "maternity leave". Lene Rantala has taken her leading position as best goal keeper while she was away (and Susanne is still not sure to go to the OL or not). Other players to praice for this match: Mette Vestergaard, Fruelund and Pernille Hansen. Tonje asked to leave the court as she had the flu.

Janne Kolling to Slagelse

Even though she denied it earlier on, it is now certain, that Janne Kolling leaves Norwegian Tertnes a year earlier than expected and goes back to Denmark in order to play for Anja Andersen's team Slagelse. Anja finds Janne the best right-wing she has ever played with and also likes her personality. There is always much respect and admiration around Janne, who has played 232 matches for the national team and is extremely popular among the audience. Janne herself looks forward to being part of Anja's experiment and does not mind going down a few steps on the ladder, as she has just returned from a long period of recovering from an injury. The trainer of the national team has given his permisson to let her play in the 1.st division instead of the liga and still be part of the national team. However, she does not feel quite ready for the national team yet, but plans to be so for the Olympics.

Anja's plan for this year is for Slagelse to become qualified for European Clubhandball. She also wants her team to find an entertaining style with many goals, which can attract the audience.

Susanne back in the goal for Sunday's match against Slovenia

It was in the WC finals in 1998, that we last saw the legendary goalie Susanne Munk Lauritsen between the goal posts for the Danish national team. Now after her maternity leave, the 32 year old is back again. She has missed the excitement and roar from the audience a lot. But now she has returned to a much tougher competition for the position in the goal - also Lene Rantala and Gitte Sunesen have reached her standards, so Susanne is no longer the sure first choice - she'll have to fight for it.

The second EC qualification match against Slovenia takes place in Denmark tomorrow (16. april), and the players (minus one whose name is not yet revealed) are as follows:

Lene Rantala, Larvik, Susanne Munk Lauritsen, Viborg, Katrine Fruelund, Viborg, Camilla Andersen, FIF, Mette Vestergaard Larsen, FIF, Christina Roslyng Hansen, Viborg, Tina Bøttzau, Skovbakken, Anja Nielsen, Ikast, Pernille Hansen, GOG, Lotte Kiærskou, Frederikshavn, Maja Grønbek, Skovbakken, Tonje Kjærgaard, Ikast and Line Daugaard, Ikast.

Anja takes a leap into the ring again

She just could not help it - when her team was steadily heading towards victory, the old circus horse just had to leap into the ring and do a few rounds. After 8 minutes alltogether and one goal (to 34-20) she was back on the bench again, not quite sure why she broke all her principles. But the audience got what they came for... and keep returning for at every Slagelse match: To see the champ again. Now Slagelse is getting closer to 1st. division.

The much public exposure damages Camilla's ability to play

When trainer Pytlick let Camilla start the match against Slovakia on the bench, she found it o.k. She knew, that her play was not as good as usual. And also who is to blame for it - the tabloids and esp. the Norwegian press which have flashed her private affair with the Norwegian national player Mia Hundvin all over their covers for months. It has affected her a lot, so that she cannot concentrate as well as before on her playing. But with summer approaching, she hopes to train more and then take a much deserved holiday.

Airplane crash avoided

On their way back from Slovenia, the airplane with the handball team was in the process of landing when it nearly hit a parked airplane in Munich. The pilot lifted the plane up in the air again and later landed safely, without anyone noticing anything unusual.

Play-off match against Slovakia

Denmark - Slovakia: 26 -20 (12-9).
Tonje Kjærgaard 5, Camilla Andersen 4, Anette Hofmann 4, Anja Nielsen 4

The Slovakian defense were good at giving Bøttzau (right back), Katrine (left back) and playmaker Lotte a very hard time - I guess the black marks still show. None of the Danes had much luck with their shots and after 15 minutes when it was 4-4, Camilla left the bench to come to their rescue and made 4 goals. In the first half she was covered all the time, but it was a big mistake of the Slovakians to "let her go" during the second half - you don't do that with Camilla, then she'll overtake you! The Danish defense worked well and Lene Rantala was fabulous and she helped the Danes to get into the match, keeping the goal clean for over 7 minutes. In the second half Anette Hoffmann got more space and made 3 goals. The total impression is a very "wobbly" level, going from good to bad, showing a team still very unstable. The lead was with up to 8 goals a couple of times but concentration did not last long.

The coach, Jan Pytlick, had the hard task of choosing between 3 players for the left-wing position: Anette, Christina and Line. And it was Line who was finally chosen to stay at home and Christina was let to watch from the bench. Experience still win over youth!

Will Janne Kolling stay in Norwegian Tertnes or go to Anja's Danish team Slagelse?

Rumours have it that Janne Kolling will leave Tertnes for Anja's Slagelse. After her operation in November, Janne is now back on the court again. She denies that she is switching clubs, but her contract allows her to leave Tertnes after this season.

Denmark and Norway will meet in the first OL match

On 17th. September Norway and Denmark will meet in the very first match in Sydney. Also in the second match awaits a tough opponent - Austria - followed by the easier matches against Australia and Brazil. If Norway and Denmark come first and second in their group, they cannot meet until the finals.

Norwegian national player Mia Hundvin (Tertnes) comes out and tells the press why she is moving to Denmark to play for FIF: to live with her girlfriend Camilla Andersen

In a Norwegian paper the Norwegian handball star reveals why the change of clubs was so urgent. Mia is moving to Denmark this summer from Tertnes in Norway to play for FIF in Copenhagen, so that she can both play in the same club as Camilla and live with her.

Already when Camilla negotiated with Tertnes (Mia's club) earlier this winter, the club urged Mia to tell the truth to the public. Tertnes wanted to end all the rumours about the relationship and the reasons for Camilla's final rejection of the club. But at that time Mia did not feel like telling it to the world, and when Camilla did not change clubs anyway, the matter was silenced again.. However, in a Norwegian paper yesterday, Mia revealed her reasons for moving to Denmark and thus came out to the public. The clubs and national teams are a hundred percent behind them and find it brave of them to tell. The two will meet as opponents already in the first Olympic match. "It will not be the first time a couple meet as opponents on a handball court" says Norwegian trainer of the national team, Marit Breivik, but neither she nor Camilla/Mia find that situation problematic at all.

Big congratulations, respect and pride flags waving! They become much needed rolemodels - but at the price of privacy. What is to be preferred? Add your comments..

Weise Cup

Denmark - Norway 27- 22 (16 - 12)

It was only a reduced Norwegian team that met the Danes in the finals of the Weise Cup. Only 7 of their players had also participated in the WC. Therefore the Danish victory came easy after the inital period, where a comfortable lead by 4 or 5 goals was kept throughout the match.

This Cup has been used as a playground for new experiments and testing of new players by most of the teams, also the Danish and Norwegian. Therefore the value of entertainment has not always been that great, but hopefully that will change when it becomes more serious later this year.

We have seen a player like Lotte Kiærskou grow stronger and becoming a leading figure. Anja Andersen predicts her to become the initiator of attacks, which is lacking so much on the Danish team.

Goals for Denmark: Lotte Kiærskou 5, Tonje 5, Tina Bøttzau 4, Anja Nielsen 4, Camilla Andersen 3, Mette Vestergaard 2, Line Daugård 2, Camilla Frederiksen 1, Fruelund 1.

Germany became second, Norway third and Poland last in the Weise Cup.

See also the German Weise Cup page (in German) where you can read:

Denmark - Poland: 35 - 23 (18 -11)

This victory was an easy one against an unexperienced and very predictable Polish team. The Danes had a very good day, esp. for individual play, but that is not difficult thinking of the easy match. Rikke Pedersen had her chance in the goal as Sunesen had a day off to take care of her studies. Rikke is in a way not very flexible in her movements, but had one good save by the very tip of her fingers, when everybody thought the ball would roll into the goal behind her back. In the last part of the first half, the team had a down period (motivation is hard to keep up) when the score came as close as 15 -11. Camilla Frederiksen had a good day as well in the middle defense with Tonje.

Goals for Denmark: Lotte Kiærskou 8, Camilla Andersen 6, Camilla Frederiksen 4, Louise Pedersen 4, Line Daugård 3, Christina Roslyng 3, Katrine Fruelund 2, Merete Møller 2, Tina Bøttzau 2, Tonje Kjærgaard 1.

Trainer Pytlick has decided to prolong his contract, which would otherwise expire around January 2001.

And then we congratulate Camilla Andersen with her match no. 175!

By the way - Norway lost against Germany 30-23 (14-12). Yesterday, the Norwegians won 34-23 over Poland.

Denmark - Germany 28 -24 (12 -14)

In this first match of the four-nation tournament in Germany, the victory was won by the aid of two hardworking players in particular- Lotte Kiærskou and Lene Rantala. It started very well with an enthusiastic team again unified with good old veterans Bøttzau and Hoffmann - the Danes swept away with a lead of 5-2 and 8-5, untill a long dead period broke up the pace, blocking for the Danish players' movements and ability to play together. They simply were too impatient and threw the balls away too quickly. However, Pytlick did not help them much by exchanging the players too often. The Germans were good - very good even for a team full of new players - and lead by the very fast Grit Jurack.

At half-time, the Germans were in front with two goals and in the second half they steadily advanced untill 18 - 13. Then Hoffmann broke they spell with a goal and the saviour of the match enterede the court: Lotte Kiærskou as a replacement for Camilla Andersen, who had only contributed with a load of misses. Lotte was not influenced by any mental porridge and resolutely, she scored 6 goals during the rest of the second half. Also goalie Lene Rantala was strong and with her usual fighting spirit, she did her best to block the shots. Saturday our next opponent is Poland and Sunday we await our favourite enemy: Norway.

Goals for Denmark: Katrine Fruelund and Lotte Kiærskou 6, Camilla Andersen and Merete Møller 3, Mette Vestergaard, Anette Hoffmann, Tina Bøttzau, Anja Nielsen and Tonje Kjærgaard 2.

Denmark in OL group A with Norway

The national team seems very satisfied with the draw, even though Denmark is in the same group as Norway, Austria, Australia and Brazil.

Group B consists of: France, Rumania, Hungary, South Korea and Angola.

Jan Pytlick thinks, it is the easiest group. The four best in each group continue to the quarterfinals. Here we can risk meeting Hungary, which is considered a tough opponent along with France and Rumania. Also Camilla Andersen is satisfied, as we won't have to meet Norway in a quarterfinal.

Also the Norwegians are very happy with the groups and they go for the gold. We get an idea of their strength when Denmark meets Norway this Sunday in Neubrandenburg.

Anja Andersen gets her players' license back

Danish national tv brought the amazing piece of information this Sunday: Anja Andersen has asked her former Norwegian team BSK to get her players' license delivered back to her. She has a three year contract as a trainer and sports manager for the Danish team Slagelse, but the team denies that she will start playing for them. She is said to be declared a clean bill of health by her doctors. As Anja and BSK have no economic obligations towards one another, she should have no difficulties in getting the license. My guess is, she can't stay away from the court - just a wee throw at the goal when things get tough? Yeees?? :-)

The long missed stars are shining again!

When national trainer Da Jan Pytlick made public the players for the national team and for the coming four-nation cup (Weise Cup) in Germany on the 10.-12. March, there were some great surprises on the list. Their names are Tina Bøttzau, Janne Kolling, Anette Hoffman and Susanne Munk Lauritsen; well-known and missed players from the "golden era" and the wisdom and charisma which the team lacks at the moment. Karen Brødsgaard will also be with us again when she is ready after her injury.

Much to her own surprise, Tina Bøttzau made up her mind to return to the national team after a break of two years. She will stay at least untill the European Championship in December. Now that she has finished her education as a teacher, she has got the urge back - especially to participate in the Olympics. See a picture of her here on B.T.'s site.

Anette Hoffman is regaining her strength after her injury, but it will take a while before she is back on her old level of performance. She is the third leftwing player chosen for the 4-nation tournament, and Pytlick will then have to find out, who match each other the best.

Susanne is back on the team after her maternal leave, but will be saved a bit in the beginning. It is also important to introduce new forces in the goal, when the time comes to replace the "old" goalies. The only debutant is Rikke Skov from Viborg.

The national team for the four-nation tournament (Denmark, Germany, Norway, Poland):

Lene Rantala, Larvik ,
Rikke Petersen, Kolding ,
Katrine Fruelund, Viborg,
Louise Pedersen, Horsens,
Camilla Andersen, FIF ,
Mette Vestergaard, FIF ,
Anette Hoffmann, Kolding ,
Christina Roslyng, Viborg,
Merete Møller, Larvik,
Anja Nielsen, Ikast,
Lotte Kiærskou, Frederikshavn,
Tonje Kjæraard, Ikast,
Line Daugaard, Ikast,
Tina Bøttzau, Skovbakken,
Camilla Frederiksen, FIF.

The 10 players who will also go to the Olympics:
Gitte Sunesen, GOG,
Natasja Dybmose, Ikast,
Susanne Munk Lauritsen, Viborg,
Pernille Hansen, GOG,
Janne Kolling, Tertnes (will arrive a bit later),
Maja Grønbæk, Skovbakken,
Kristine Andersen, Ikast,
Karen Brødsgaard, Viborg (will arrive a bit later),
Winnie Mølgaard, GOG
Rikke Skov, Viborg (debutant).

Gitte Sunesen is too busy with her studies to participate at the moment.

Rikke Solberg comeback to handball

Rikke Solberg (29), the very popular blonde player on the national team, had to leave handball in 1998 after 84 national matches, due to too many injuries and two operations. She had to cancel her participation in the Olympics and European Championship in 96 and the World Championship in 97. Now she is back on the handball court again, not for her old club Viborg but for Århus HK (no. four in the 1. division), with which she has signed a contract for this season.

Anja presents her new team

After many negotiations and second thoughts, Anja Andersen finally presented her new Danish team Slagelse FH. She will thus start her career as trainer and sportsmanager with a 3 years contract. She will be coaching the women's best team and get the responsability for the women's, men's and youth teams. Even though Slagelse is only an obscure team in the second division, it is just what she was looking for. She has always wanted to build up a team. And her ambitions are high, just as they have always been.

After three years, she wants Slagelse's women's team to be the best in the country and the men's team to be on their way to the handball league. Her goal is to build up the best youth teams and some of Slagelse's top players must assist that development as trainers. Anja will work for it that Slagelse gets as well financed as Viborg within a year. And that will mean a big budget.

In spite of rumours of the contrary, Jeon Ho Hong (now BSK), Sharon Cain and the Dutch goalkeeper Jokelyn Tienstra will start on the team this summer, when Slagelse expectantly enters first division. To the question of her own qualifications for the job, she argues that she herself has been a kind of assistant trainer for the last ten years - and that is the best practice. She needs no courses in that. Anja will start on her new job on the 1. May.

Many teams want Camilla

Camilla Andersen has rejected the Norwegian team Tertnes after many negotiations and visits. Firstly, she did not want to leave her Danish club FIF, secondly, she could not live with the big media interest connected with the team and thirdly, the team could not quarantee, that the players and coach would remain on the team for long.

Now many other teams see their chance coming. The press has mentionned both the (in)famous Swiss team of international players called Hypo Niederösterreich (Norwegian Verdens Gang and Danish Ekstrabladet) and also the Danish league team Viborg, with the former national coach Ulrik Wilbek.

But Camilla is now very pleased remaining with FIF, since the team got rid of the French trainer with whom she did not get along very well. On her homepage she makes clear, that she has no intentions of leaving FIF at the moment, and that the press speculations are not true. She has a contract with FIF to the summer of 2001.
