Barnstoneworth United v Canobolas Rangers
Brabham 1, July 5th, 2003

They say that dreams have no colour. This was proved incorrect on Saturday as the dream of the day was Red & White.

The favourite past time of any Barnie reporter is to stick the knife in to the glory boys from United. After the sad and abject failure of the week before, this week was looking to be a good week for such pursuits. That pleasure can happily be put aside for now as United put it all together to beat the competition front-runners and previously undefeated Canobolas Rangers.

Barnstoneworth have had an unusual year with wins against well credentialed opponents but losses to lowly placed teams. This day was one of the highs. Barnies being given a 41/2 goal start by most of the Barnie Army. Only the faithful made money this week.

It is hard to know what made the difference this week. Perhaps it was that the loyalties of the Barnie Army were undivided as Ottershaw had the bye this week. Perhaps it was United playing with the spirit usually reserved for Ottershaw. Maybe the fact that a number of key players were out injured that the others lifted themselves. Or perhaps it was just the way things go in sport and the evenness of the competition was on display.

The Barnie Keeper, whose name momentarily escapes me, appeared to bulk up this week in anticipation of a heavy workload. As it was he had comparatively little to do and never had to pick the ball from the back of the net.

Of the general play there was some nice passing and ball retention by Rangers but their attacks seemed to fall at the final hurdle. The scrambling Barnies defence had their measure although there were a few tense moments.

The more the game went on the more frustrated Rangers became. There were some heated moments with Paul Miskell firing up for the game and Rangers saw him as a target for their frustration. A yellow card settled things a little but Canobolas were rattled.

Paul Bloomfield was one of the Autumn signings for Barnies and he has been magical to watch. His surgical first touches and clinical disposals from the backline prove what an asset he is. He was rewarded when he moved forward for a corner in the first half. His header was all that separated the sides on the scoresheet and was described as about the best Barnies goal ever seen.

Bloomfield nearly managed another header from a corner in the second half but it saved the wrong side of the crossbar.

Damian Priest is another who had a strong game. His forays up front troubled the Canobolas defence and could easily have had a goal of his own. It has been good to see Scott Hennessy leaving the comfort of his corporate box of our sponsors Skilled Engineering and he ran hard. Perhaps a little less of the comfort would help him even more.

A good week for Barnies with no major crises emanating from Barnies HQ and a brilliant win to top it all off. Weeks like this are rare in Barnies history so perhaps we should be allowed to wallow for a short while. With these guys the next drama is never far away.
