Barnstoneworth Ottershaw v Kinross 2nd XI
Kinross North, May 17th, 2003

There has been a propensity towards reality television in recent times. There is a faction within the Barnstoneworth juggernaut that is pressing for reality journalism to keep up with the times. However it was found during a recent poll that not many people are interested in fat old fellas running aimlessly around the field on Saturday afternoons. The concept has now been discarded.

It is often said that history is written by the winners. So it appears to be Barnies' fate to record the history of the clash with Kinross 2nds on Saturday. While reality journalism is not being pursued it must be said that a modicum of truth is always a good starting point. Hence the score line of 3-1 seems to be as good a point as any.

The scorer was made to work from the first minute as Mal Key was lurking on the right flank for Barnies and taking the ball he beat 17 defenders then hammered the ball past the astonished Kinross keeper to record his first ever goal. In celebration he back flipped his way back for the restart.

The rest of the half was almost anticlimactic after such a start with Barnies generally controlling the midfield but unable to extend the lead. There were a few tense moments as the young students were able to outpace their aged opponents but could not finish off their good work with only the keeper to beat.

Rev Sid Grindley made a welcome return and was largely responsible for Barnies domination of the midfield. The wise head and trained body showcased the skills that make him a crowd favourite. Bruce Middleton, also missed last week, was back to his best in the backline pushing the attacks wider where they were easier to close down.

Sinisa, the mobile Serbian mountain, was again popping up regularly and relished another chance to stretch his legs up front.

The second half started in much the same manner as the first with Sid 'Red Fox' Grindley using his wiles to shoot from the edge of the crowded box to chalk another goal for Barnies. Many thought it selfish when he'd struck the ball as there were numerous players open out wide. But the maestro knew what he was doing.

The next best chance for the Red & Whites to score was from a penalty awarded when Ash McAleese was attacked from behind by the frustrated students. Skipper Powell stepped up to the mark and struck the ball sweetly and straight. The keeper had no chance as it whistled past in a flash. Sadly the score line wasn't affected as the ball also sailed past the wrong side of the crossbar.

Kinross pulled one back on another of their rushes that they managed to finish so the Barnie Army was relieved when Mal Key again returned the deficit to two with another fine strike. It left Key with about 15 minutes to complete his hat trick which he was unable to do. He was however thrilled with his two goals.

So Barnstoneworth Ottershaw have had three matches away from the Stadium winning two. One more than they were able to win away last year. The first match at the fortress this week is much anticipated and the crowd is expected to be monstrous.
