Barnstoneworth Ottershaw v Canobolas Rangers
Brabham 2, 3rd May, 2003

Clichs are often tossed around recklessly when it comes to sports reporting. One saying that would can be used without recklessness for Saturday's clash between Barnstoneworth Ottershaw and Canobolas Blue would be "Soccer was the winner on the day".

A game played in glorious sunshine with lots of banter going to and fro saw lots of old legs new to soccer running around. It may be said that this is where the recklessness came from as both sides had numerous players who had never seriously kicked a soccer ball before. Both teams were there to enjoy a run around and pretend they could play the game.

The crowd were in full voice and the Rangers section were constant with their heckling. The fact that they were heckling their own players only added to the spirit of the game.

The game itself was surprisingly won by Barnies who are notorious travellers. Last year they only managed one win away from the fortress that is Stadium Barnstoneworth where they were undefeated. The thought that so many players new to Barnies might take winning as given might be a setback fro the rest of the season. It is quite likely that reality will settle in before too long.

Tim Johnson made an energetic switch from the oval ball game to the round ball. He did notice however that it is easier when there are scrums and lineouts to use as a breather. Steve Adams also made an impact in his debut Barnies game. His first half strike was all that separated the two teams and he has shown that he will take some stopping this season.

Rev Sid, the stalwart settled well into his customary midfield role and fed good ball to the forwards. Bruce Middleton also picked up from last year in a back line that has been decimated by injury since last year. The revamped back line looked impressive on Saturday but judgements will be reserved for a sterner test.

Ed Cato made some good runs up the flanks and looks to be well recovered from knee problems last year. Dan Kennedy on the other hand had a few good runs but looks to be hampered by a knee complaint. It should not diminish his enjoyment of th3e game but will increase his pain on Sunday as he hobbles around.

A pleasing sight was that of three invalids of varying degrees being able to make it to the game to bolster the Barnie Army. Matt Healey is out of plaster but not ready for bowls yet. Phil Hodges is out of hospital and will join Matt in the Barnie Bowler Boys. Glenn Harpley got his backside in gear enough to even play for Barnies United on Saturday night.

All in all a promising start to both a winning and enjoyable season for Barnies. Hope springs eternal for the Red & White faithful.
