Barnstoneworth Ottershaw v Cudal
Brabham 16, June 21st, 2003

There was dismay in the Sale St Barnstoneworth HQ this week as the world heard the Beckham news. Word is that Beckham was ready to sign with Barnies and had all but put pen to paper.

"He'd been to Orange and loved the feel of the club. He thought it was a great place to bring up his kids," said club CEO Phil Hodges. " We're stunned as he seemed so happy about the deal."

Apparently there were cold feet on the part of Manchester United. They believed their supporter base would leave in droves to join the Barnie Army. The loss in merchandising was seemingly too great a cost for the club.

"'Davo' would have just finished off our line up" said a dejected Dan Kennedy, club stalwart. "We're really happy with the rest of the line-up and he would have just completed us off and given us a good shot at the title."

While the club has been despondent it also affected their play on Saturday as they went down to Cudal 1-6. Before the match the to sides were equal on the table. The winner making it to the top four meant their was much at stake.

Some in the vast crowd said that the Cudal goals were against the run of play. After last week's effort where Barnies were outplayed only to lose by one goal, this week saw them competing better but losing by a wide margin.

"They deserved to win. No doubt about it" said Sarajevon midfielder Sinisa Kosarac, "but the margin was more like what we deserved last week." Kosarac has enjoyed more of a roving commission this year and is relishing the chance to run and play the ball.

Dave Craig is another who is taking his opportunities. As a rookie this year, he has been an unknown factor but he is a quiet achiever and is developing well. He is not particularly noticed but is generally picking up some best and fairest points. He and Beckham would surely have dominated the midfield. Throw the old red fox, Sid Grindley into the equation, and they would have no equal. Que sera, sera!!

It's the story of Barnies that they are beaten by younger fitter teams. There was no exception this week as Cudal stormed through the backline and made the most of their opportunities. Some of the goasl appeared to be in slow motion but only one of the two penalties was converted by Cudal. The other was nearly saved but the rebound was put away just before half time.

Down four at halftime, Barnies worked harder in the second half and the 2-1 scorline in the second term gave the Barnie Army something to cheer after the disappointment of the week.

Barnies goal was made by 'Rooster' Haydon who had been pressuring the keeper all day. He caused a fumble which was put away by Mal Key who goes to the top of the goal scorer list this year. Haydon had also forced the Cudal Keeper to take a ball outside his box. The resultant free kick was not put away but must have helped the goal that eventually came.

Another curiosity was the return of 'TJ' Johnson who was not expected to return for some time after a recuriing knee injury flared last week. Apparently 'the missus was away'. The bookies are not taking any odds for Tim to play next week as they have lost too much money in recent weeks.
