Barnstoneworth Ottershaw v East Orange Red
Stadium Banstoneworth, May 24th, 2003

The expected triumphant return to Stadium Barnstoneworth for Ottershaw was not on offer on Saturday as they went down to East Orange Red 1-3. It should have been a red letter day as it was the first time that the two Barnstoneworth sides had played home matches side by side. Ottershaw, with the bigger crowd pleasers took Stadium Barnstoneworth while United played at Barnies Stadium next door.

Sadly the match will be known for the unsportsmanlike behaviour of Ottershaw. It appears that the players have been developing their sledging techniques of late and were trying to put this to use on Saturday. It was the ugly side of modern sport that sadly reared its head.

Club Supremo tried to explain away the behaviour. "You've got to remember that these guys are getting on a bit and losing their faculties. They're really quite impressionable. It's been over 30 years since some of them have seen much success on the sporting field.""

And so it seems that they have been influenced by the Australian cricket team and saw sledging as a way to success. This did not work well and the point was emphasised when it was shown that their technique left much to be desired. The best that they could come up with was when Phil Jackson suggested the mother of one Easts player, wore army boots. The veracity of such a statement was brought home to Phil by the lady in question as she made virtually non-existent his future chances of further fatherhood.

This is not the first foray into borrowed culture by Barnies. The widely used practice of raising a shirt over one's head to celebrate the scoring of a goal had to be banned last year after many in the Stadium lost the contents of their stomachs over the site revealed. The staff at the ground refused to clean the mess so the practice was outlawed.

The game itself was a tense affair on Saturday and The Barnie Army was in full voice when the Red & Whites went up early through an Ash McAleese strike that left the keeper floundering.

With the ebb and flow of the game progressing, Easts eventually got one back through a centred ball that wasn't effectively covered.

With the scores locked at halftime it was hoped that the unbeaten run at the Stadium would continue even tho the Stadium had been relocated over summer. Sadly Easts managed to snap the defensive line of Barnies and get one past the scrambling defence and it was then hard for Barnies to catch up.

Mal Key, after his sensational double last week was in goal scoring form. He struck again this week with the ball coming into the far post from a corner, neatly onto his head and into the net. Unfortunately, as luck would have it, this did not make the score 2-2 but 1-3 and there it remained.

It is rumoured that some of the glory boys in Barnstoneworth United are disappointed at the lack of coverage their games receive. It should therefore be noted that they prevailed over CYMS White 2-0 on Saturday. Any lamented the lack of coverage for Saturday need only look as far as the socks on Saturday to see the difference in passion, spirit and regard for tradition that means the Army will generally follow Ottershaw to the ends of the Earth. It should also be noted that as a club Barnies have one more games than they have lost which, this far into the season, is almost unprecedented. Hip hip hooray!!!
