Ian:
Yeah, how yous all going there? Ah, my name's Ian Caudell. Ah, I'm
from far north Queensland. [break in audio] There's animals crawling
in and out of me house all day. And, ah, snakes, everything you
can imagine. And once youonce youthey don't feel a fear
off you, they're not scared either. They're even more scared first.
And, ah, once they don't have a fear off you, well, then, they feel
safe there, there's no way you'll get hurt. They won't hurt you.
And, um, you just got to check all the time, lifting up wood because
things are asleep and you don't want to startle them, and things
like that. Just be careful if you've got wood in the yard, and things
likelifting things up. There might be a snake under there
and that's pretty general in any part of the world, all that sort
of stuff. A lot of amazing animals in Australia, although, there's
a lot of travellers I've met from overseas that are going, "Wow,
man there are so many dangerous animals here,"well and
there is but there are other places too. At least you can sleep
out in the bush here. There's not too many things that can get you.
I'd feel more scared in the States or something like that in a national
park where there's bears and things. I think it's more scary than
what's here. Or tigers or things like that. I stayed in places inin...ahin
EuropeI ah, what do you call it...AsiaWest Java and
all sorts of wild places. There's tigers and things like that. Now
that's a bit freaky for me. Ah, I don't worry about snakes and all
that. I mean there'syou're lucky if one person dies from snake
bite now. And, ah, I mean, a lot of people still get bit, but you're
close to help. [interrupted]
Michael:
Are there any spiders?
Ian: Yeah,
spiders are a bit of a worry. But you just got to keep your eye
out. If you're livingI mean, they're pretty much everywhere
even the cities. Sydney's full of redback spiders and things like
that. And, ah, there used to be an old bushy about, ah, the, ah,
bloke that went to the outside toilet there that we used to have
in the old days and he got bitten on the bum because they like living
in the toilet, see?
Michael:
What do you call those?
Ian: A
redback spider. And there's an old song about, "Got bitten
[singing] by a redback spider in the dunny last night." [Laughing]
You see, but it actually happened to me once [laughing] in ain
an old dunny. I bloody got bit like the old song! It's the only
time I got bit by one of them and I freaked out because at certain
time of the year thetheI can't remember but it is quite
poisonous and depending on their size too and stuff. They make you
sick and some people can die depending on their condition and how
your heart is and if you're young or old and whatever. But people
have been known to die.
