OUR WAY OF LIFE IN COLLEGE

The following text describes the usual events that happened in our everyday life while at college.

Daily College Routine - Lab Session Routine - Theory Exam Routine
DAILY COLLEGE ROUTINE Goto Page Top ↑ Goto Page Bottom ↓

Ø      We would enter every semester with some joy but it would get dull within a month or two.

Ø      As a day starts, we would welcome it by coming to the college in our college bus, having the so-called breakfast at our mess and going to the class.

Ø      At the mess, during breakfast, the process of standing in queues and most of the times, joining the queue in the middle was quite common.  This would make the others angry but only sometimes they would shout at us.  The process of waiting for a long time to get a cup of tea that too in half cleaned tumblers were common.  Some people would wash the cups with tea itself.  Many times, we had to wait for water also and no tumblers for water would be available during breakfast.

Ø      Then we would begin the day's chat.  Sometimes we would complete any observation work, record work or assignment by copying from our friends.

Ø      Then the bell would ring and the first hour of the day would begin, bringing with it sleep and the expectation of the break time.  The attendance for the day would be taken and that data will be entered in the master attendance record.  So people coming late will have to follow the lab assistant and get it corrected.  Also attendance would be taken during all the different classes of the day but would not be used for any purpose.

Ø      As the second hour starts, the expectation of the break time would increase.  If it is a lab hour, then we would have an occasion to rise from our sleep else the sleep would continue.

Ø      Then the break time would come and some of us would stand in the corridor or sit in the class or go to the store and have puff, tea etc.  In all these places we would chat as though we haven't met for months.

Ø      Then a group of boys would gather in the corridor and mock the girls who pass through. Most girls would remain silent while some girls would answer harshly.  There would also be mocking among the boys themselves.  This would also happen among the girls.

Ø      When the bell rings indicating the end of the break time, we would be reluctant to go inside the class.  We would only go in due to the compulsion of the staff who pass through the corridor.

Ø      Then the two/three sessions before lunch would pass and hunger would be building up in our stomachs.  Although the lunch time was changed during various occasions for various classes, it remained more or less the same for us.

Ø      Then the bell would ring and the lunch hour would come.  It would be a fateful hour for all of us because we had to eat the college food.  Very few of us would stay in the class.  Others would march to the dinning hall, take up a set of long rows and start chatting.

Ø      Then after the lunch, most of us would walk back to the class while some of us would go to the library and search for books.  Very few of us would read newspapers there.

Ø      As usual, whenever they find time, some boys would gather in the corridor and mock the girls who pass through and also mock among themselves.  But this time those happenings will be less compared to the break time because people would be tired after the lunch.

Ø      The session after lunch will be most testing time in the entire day both for us and the staff who would come during that hour.  That is because we would be very deeply immersed in our sleep.  If that hour is a lab session, then it can bring some relief to us.

Ø      Then the sessions after lunch would pass by, mostly in sleep.

Ø      We would be waiting for the last session of the day with great eagerness to go home.  There would be arguments with the staff who would not allow us to go before the bell rings and there would be rushes near the exit of the class, minutes before the last bell rings and closes the day.

Ø      Then after the customary 'bye', we used to get into our buses which would leave the college (jail) and bring happiness to us before the next day begins.

Ø      For us it would be another day ended in a prison life of four years.

LAB SESSION ROUTINE Goto Page Top ↑ Goto Page Bottom ↓

Ø      First, those who hadn't brought the lab-coats would borrow them.  Most of these borrowings would be done long before the lab-hour starts.  Then we would slowly wear the coats (the dark green coats) and move towards the lab.  During the first year, it was a grey coloured coat common to all departments.  From the second year onwards, each department was allotted a coloured coat, with our department being allotted a dark green coat.

Ø      Then we would start our experiments by first getting the devices by writing a list and signing them.

Ø      Within a short period of the start of the experiment, especially if they don't get the output, some of us will start chatting and slowly deviate from the experiment.  Also there would be lot of mocking among the various members of the groups.

Ø      Some people would honestly do the experiments till they get the output.  Then they too would start to chat and mock.

Ø      Only some particular people in a batch would do the experiment whereas the others would sit and watch and chat a lot.

Ø      While doing the experiment, we would copy the circuit diagram from our seniors' record.  Sometimes, those records would be wrong and we wouldn't get the desired output.

Ø      We would try it for a long time and if we don't get it, we would call the lab assistants.  They would do random checks and then say 'that connection is wrong', 'this diagram is wrong' etc.

Ø      Then we would try again and even then if we don't get the output, we will ask the lab assistants to do the experiments for us.

Ø      If the lab assistants get the output, we would happily take the readings and that experiment would be over.

Ø      Even if they don't get the output, we would copy the readings from the other batches, seniors' records etc.

Ø      If still we aren't able to complete it in time for the practical exam, we would have that experiment cancelled for the practical exam or have it converted into a study experiment.  Very rarely such experiments would be cancelled.

Ø      Then comes the task of completing the graph and getting the correction for that experiment in our observation note-books.

Ø      Then comes the boring task of writing the records.  Most of time some people would regularly complete the records, while others will seek help from these people to complete their records.

Ø      Then the model practicals would be conducted.  Most of us wouldn't take it seriously.  Then the dates for the practical exam would be announced.

Ø      During the University practical exam, there will be a lot of speculation about the external examiner and his/her behaviour.

Ø      As each batch completes, the other people would queue up around them and ask them about the experiments that were kept and what was asked in the viva-voce.

Ø      Most importantly, during the exam, we would enquire whether the lab assistants or the staff would help us in case we don't get the output.

Ø      As the practical exam ends, we would throw our observation books and look ahead for the theory exams.

Ø      With that another practical exam for yet another semester has come to end.  Mostly we would prepare for the sake of our exams and forget about that afterwards.  Click here to know about some memorable practicals

THEORY EXAM ROUTINE Goto Page Top ↑ Goto Page Bottom ↓

Ø      After seeing the tentative time-table for the theory exams, most of us wouldn't take it seriously.  We will have the attitude of 'Let me cross the bridge when it comes'.  Click here to see the subjects we studied in various semesters

Ø      At times there would be unit tests which would be a total waste of time.

Ø      The model exam would be a highly comical one in the entire exam preparation.  None of us would study for that and we would complete the exam in no time.  In order to discourage this attitude of us, the management wouldn't allow us to go out of the class until the exam is over.  But that didn't affect us in any way because we would sleep during the model exam.  The management also wouldn't allow us to do that.  No matter what, the model exam would be a total waste of time for us.

Ø      Then the study holidays would come.  Only now we would have the thoughts of preparing for the exam.  Some of us would do group study.  Mostly those group study sessions were only utilized for chatting, mocking etc.

Ø      Then there would be 'doubts' exchanged through telephone.  On those months of the study holidays, our telephone usage will increase a lot.  Some people would also 'tie-up' with some select people to clear their doubts.

Ø      Then the customary question 'Have you studied?' will arise in plenty.  For this, the customary answer 'No' will be there even on the eve of the exam.

Ø      Then would come the ritual of getting the hall-tickets.  During the year-end semesters, that would involve a lot of verifications and the so-called 'no-dues certificate' to be cleared.

Ø      Then on the eve of the exam, there would be a flurry of 'Previous years question papers', 'Two marks book' and unknown 'local-author' books.

Ø      On the morning of the exams, people would be reading seriously in the bus.  In the college, they would sit on the corridor and read, chat, discuss till the exam starts.

Ø      Then the examiner would come.  We would say the customary 'Best of Luck' or 'All the best' and take the necessary things and enter the hall.

Ø      Some people would carry 'bits'.  Some would indulge in 'answer-paper exchange'.  There would also be some instances where the examiner would catch hold of the people indulging in malpractices.  But none of them had become a big issue.

Ø      During the last 10 minutes of the exam, we would write a lot as though we hadn't written anything during the last two hours and fifty minutes.

Ø      As the exam ends, there would be a lot of 'after-exam activities' like enquiring about the status of the exam by all of us.  There would also be question-paper discussions and marks calculations.  Some people, who hadn't done the exam well will not like these activities and would stay away.

Ø      Then we would leave for lunch and return to our buses and go home.  Some of us would have the thoughts and plans for preparing for the next exam.  Click here to see the top 10 difficult subjects

Ø      At the end of the last theory exam, there would always be a customary smile in all our faces.

Ø      Yet another semester has ended and with that has gone the subjects that we studied for that semester.
