Chapel Crossroads 1842

After Robert Madeley was born his parents Joshua and Ann moved their family from Sleap to a small hamlet known locally as Chapel Crossroads.  The nearest village to Chapel Crossroads is Rodington.

Called Chapel Crossroads by the locals, this hamlet is where the Joshua Madeley and his family lived from 1880 to 1911.

Their house is indicated with a red dot, and their house was aptly named Madeley House.

Other historic building in Chapel Crossroads include The Crown Inn, Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Draw Bridge and the Canal in blue.

The Shropshire Union Shrewsbury Branch Canal worked its way East through hamlets and villages from Shrewsbury to Newport.

The old map opposite shows the Chapel Crossroads hamlet road links to Rodington Village and Rodington Heath.

Chapel Crossroads was protected from open cross winds as it was surrounded by trees. The hamlet would also be hidden from view by the trees as canal barges pass by.

Robert and his siblings would walk along Hunkington Lane each day to get to the school in Rodington Village.

It is not far to Rodington from Chapel Crossroads - just down the lane and they would enter a bustling village.
