Vol.1 : Gokou

I was finally able to get a complete set of the Super Collection figures. Bandai made the Super Collection figures in the early 90s. This is a little known Dragon Ball Z toyline, which preceded the more recognized Super Battle Collection toyline. As most DBZ toy collectors know, the Super Collection toyline is very rare and are some of the most sought after DBZ toys. Some collectors consider the Super Collection figures to be rarer then the SBC Super Saiyan 3 pack.

The sculpting of these figures is the best I've seen in any DBZ toys. Even with the release of the new Irwin figures I still personally give the Super Collection the nods in the sculpt department. The Super Collection figures do not have alot of articulation. They possess the same basic amount as the Super Battle Collection figures. You basically get shoulders and waist articulation with the Super Collection figures.

Bandai only released 10 figures in the Super Collection line. The figures of Gohan and Krillin are included in a two pack. No one really knows why Bandai only produced 10 Super Collection figures and then cancelled the line. It is very unusual since the Super Collection toys feature much better sculpts then the Super Battle Collection figures. Also the articulation between the two toylines is very similar to one another, so the SBCs do not have an advantage in that area.

    • Vol. 1 : Gokou
    • Vol. 2 : Vegeta
    • Vol. 3 : Super Saiyan Gokou
    • Vol. 4 : Krillin and Gohan
    • Vol. 5 : Super Saiyan Vegeta
    • Vol. 6 : Piccolo
    • Vol. 7 : Trunks
    • Vol. 8 : Super Saiyan Trunks
    • Vol. 9 : Super Saiyan Gohan

To get an understanding of the sculpting of the Super Collection toys take a look at the pics of Gokou on this page. Particularly take a look at the headshot. Now take out your SBC Gokou if you have him. Compare the two figures together and tell me which sculpt looks the best?

I've gotten alot of email from collectors asking exactly what kind of articulation these toys possess. I'll explain the articulation of each individual figure as I go along. The Gokou figure has articulated arms, which move in a similar fashion to the Perfect Gokou from the Super Battle Collection line. The arms do not move up and down, as is the standard method. Instead the arms move from side to side. The Gokou also has an articulated waist. As you can see the Super Collection toys aren't packed with articulation. But it never bothered collectors of the Super Battle Collection line and I'm sure it won't bother those collectors looking to start their hunt for Super Collection figures.

Vol.2 : Vegeta

Next up is Vegeta, the prince of the Saiyan race. During Dragon ball Z, Vegeta and Gokou constantly push each other to be the best and strongest fighters in the world. Vegeta is the ultimate badass and is always first to rush into battle. He always is arrogant and very cocky, as he believes he cannot be defeated. His main objective throughout DBZ is to become the best, which means being superior to Gokou. However, as hard as Vegeta tried he always finished second to Gokou. He never accepts this fact until the end of the series where he finally admits Gokou is stronger then him.

Vegeta is small in stature but is one of the strongest fighters in DBZ. The Super Collection figures really exceed in the area of scale, as the toy of Vegeta is pretty small when compared to the other Super Collection figures. Vegeta has articulated arms and an articulated waist. The arms only move up and down, as is the case with most of the Super Battle Collection toys. The head sculpt of Vegeta is also excellently done. The paint application of Vegeta is also very interesting. The blue parts of Vegeta feature what appears to be two tone paint. It's really hard to explain and the pictures really don't show it that well. You have to see it in person to really get the picture.

Vol.3 : Super Saiyan Gokou

Here is a picture of one of my favorite DBZ toys. It's a figure of Gokou during his battle with Freiza. Check out the tattered clothes. Isn't that a great sculpt. This is the only representation of Super Saiyan Gokou in tattered and ripped clothing. Irwin just released a 12 inch figure of Super Saiyan Gokou in tattered clothing. However the cloth outfit of that 12 inch figure doesn't capture any where near the level of detail found in this toy. Hopefully Irwin will release a 5 inch version of SS Gokou from his battle with Frieza.

The SS Gokou has the most articulation of all the Super Collection toys. SS Gokou has articulated shoulders, an articulated waist and a joint above each boot. However there is a catch to this articulation. Because of the toys sculpt the arms will look very awkward if they are pointed upwards. Also I tend not to adjust the arms very much as they feel very stiff and awkward when being adjusted. I'm a die-hard action figure fan and I get pissed off when figures only have a few articulation points. But in the case of the Super Collection figures I can put up with no articulation since the figures are so well sculpted.

Krillin's death is what trigged Gokou's transformation to Super Saiyan.
