The Phoenix Rising
The show opens at the height of a pitched BATTLE AT SALAMANDASTRON. It is mostly a contest between the vermin and the hares. However, there are two young Redwallers helping, the friends Laurelina and Brockrose. During the climax of the battle, Hithil, a young hare in the ranks of Salamandastron, is expelled for his resistance to be part of a charge a charge that Brockrose is later killed in. Laurelina starts her journey home bitter and greiving for her lost friend (EMPTY FOOTSTEPS), and followed by Hithil, who is strangely intrigued by her.
Laurelina returns to her childhood home, and the Abbey-dwellers sing its praises (REDWALL). Laurelina and Hithil greeted warmly, though she stays away from the hare, and that night there is a Midsummers Feast. At the feast we meet Springald, one of Linas childhood friends, not as close as Brockrose, for she was less adventurous and preferred to stay at Redwall with her mother than travel. Laurelina finds that since she has been away, Springalds mother Aimi has been going mad, and during the feast, she disappears and is found on the ramparts, ready to jump. Aimi is taken to the infirmary. But she does not recognize anyone, not even her daughter, but Springald hopes for the day when she will (SOMEDAY YOULL RETURN).
As the rest of the Abbey comforts her, Hithil makes a jibe about Aimi, and Laurelina tries to fight him (LOATHING). Early the next morning, she feels the urge to wander, and slips out of the abbey, followed by Hithil. When she discovers that she is being followed, she demands to know what he wants, but he cannot bring himself to tell her (HE WANTED TO SAY). Somehow moved by his internal struggle, she grudingly allows him to tag along as she visits a grove in Mossflower where her friends Mossa and Anubis live. She tells them her story and Anubis responds in kind with his rant about how life is such a BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY. That night, Laurelina and Anubis watch disgustedly as Mossa helps Hithil to fall in love with Spice, a ferret that Anubis knows (CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT?).
Time passes, and Hithil, ashamed of himself for falling in love with such a low piece of vermin, ignores Spice. In turn, she wonders if she ever liked him (I WONT SAY IM IN LOVE) and concludes that she is, and is determined to pursue him. After playing matchmaker to the couple, the romantic Mossa is depressed that the vermin get a happy ending while she stays single.
Suddenly, a small group of vermin that escaped the battle at Salamandastron attack the grove, looking to raid. They are beaten back, but Hithil is greviously wounded. Not having the skill to heal him, Laurelina, Mossa, Anubis and Spice bring him to Redwall. He lies in critical condition for awhile, and Mossa, who realizes how much she would miss him if he died, writes a fictional story in which he and Spice live happily ever. She shows it to Laurelina, who is still bitter and conflicted over Brockys death, and Laurelina rejects it. Springald, who has become more compassionate since she has accepted her mothers condition, reunites with her friend, and tells Laurelina that FORGIVENESS is what she needs to give Hithil.
Eventually, Hithil recovers, and Laurelina, having made her peace with Brockys death, forgives him. Anubis realizes that the world isnt such a bad place it can be good to him sometimes, too. And Mossa discovers that in her writing, nothing is impossible, and resolves to make a story out of the summer, what has been a true SEASON OF SONG.
