The Phoenix Rising
LAURELINA has just finished telling the Redwallers her story, and shaken off Hithil and left him inside. She slips out the main door, running across the lawns to the orchards shadowed in twilight. Swinging through the branches, she stops at the trunk of a large, twisted apple tree, and leans against the branch, looking around sadly.
LAURELINA
If she was still alive, shed be here right now.
(singing, softly)
THERES A GRIEF THAT CANT BE SPOKEN
THERES A PAIN GOES ON AND ON
I SEE THE PAWPRINTS BESIDE ME
WHERE MY FRIEND WILL NEVER RUN
WE USED TO TALK OF OUR ADVENTURES
ALL THE THINGS WED DONE AND SEEN
NOW THE TALES OF BYGONE DAYS
ARE WHEN OUR FRIENDSHIP WAS GREEN
FROM THE CORNER OF THE ORCHARD
WE GREW UP STRONG AND TRUE
DREAMING OF A WORLD OF GRANDEUR
NOW A WORLD WITHOUT YOU
THE VERY BATTLE CRIES WE PLAYED AT
BECAME YOUR FINAL SONG
ON THE SAND DUNES NEAR THE SEA
AT DAWN
The pale form of a huge badgermaid with a pinkish center stripe appears.
OH BROCKROSE, FORGIVE ME
THAT I LIVE AND YOU ARE GONE
THERES A GRIEF THAT CANT BE SPOKEN
THERES A PAIN GOES ON AND ON
I SEE YOUR FACE BESIDE MINE AT NIGHT
I SEE YOUR PAWPRINTS ON THE FLOOR
YOUR RED STRIPE APPEARS AT SUNSET
A SHOW YOU WILL WATCH NO MORE
The image of Brockrose disappears, and Laurelina is left in darkness.
OH BROCKY, BROCKY, DONT ASK ME
WHAT YOUR SACRIFICE WAS FOR
EMPTY FOOTSTEPS ON THE PATH
WHERE BROCKY WILL TREAD NO MORE.
