Computer Games

One of things I never really got into was computer based gaming. I use(d) my computer for lots of things but games were never a priority. I suppose part of it was the cost - software used to be much more expensive - and another part was that the games themselves didn't hold my interest for long. Some were just boring, some were not really user friendly, some were always the same game once the puzzles and obstacles were solved.

When I first got my computer, the early games I had were text based and seemed to be the equivalent of those "Find your own fate" stories. I got bored pretty quickly with those, especially once I solved a puzzle then i knew how to get through it again later. The challenges were too much, or too little, or didn't keep my interest long enough to solve.

The next kind of game was a primitive graphics game, fairly blocky and still boring, usually. It was unfortunate that so many of those early games were just like the text games but with pictures.

Some games i liked were the versions of board games, and one that I spent time playing repeatedly was GO, also called IGO. I'm sure there is a more proper name for it, but it is similar to Othello, although instead of flipping the playing pieces from one color to another, they were removed from the board, and only when the opponets pieces were completely surrounded by my pieces. Sounds simple enough, but it took quite some time to develop a stratgey to beat the computer consistently.

Finally, game graphics got better, they were more interactive but for me they just didn't have much of an appeal. I wasn't interested much in the "shoot em up" games like Wolfenstein or Doom, although i tried them out and it was fun for awhile.

One game I have always enjoyed, right from its first blocky graphics beginning to its current ultra- detailed version, was Sim City . I could be creative, every game was different, adn I tried lots and lots of ideas. The first time I played the game with a friend, we stayed up all night and were still going strong with it when the sun came up the next morning. It was addicitive, and was constaly "I'll just add one more and then that's it." Of course, one item begged to have another and another, and there have been too many nights with too many hours playing this game.

I was hooked. Next came Sim Ant, and skipping past Sim Farm, I got Sim Earth, Sim Tower, Sim Copter, Sim Racer... I don't have The Sims yet mostly because my current computer can't run it. :( Oh well, the next computer will.

Another game I liked but didn't really play much was Myst . It was a big sensation when it came out, great graphics, a story, a puzzle, it was a lot of things to a lot of people. I enjoyed just walking around the gaming environment, bot really even playing the game at first. It was new and different, and fun. Good music contributed to a calm atmostphere. It was later followed by Riven, although I never quite got around to getting it.

The London Game - as a passenger on the Tube, you need to reach 4 different stations, but beware, some stations are closed and there are hazard cards which could send you off in another direction. I had to buy this at Harrod's in London, it doesn't seem to be available anywhere else.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - board game based on the popular tv show
From Amazon.com -- The Chosen One, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, needs help purging Sunnydale of all the resident evil. Roll the dice to fight monsters directly, or cast magic spells against Buffy's foes. The game is designed to showcase Buffy's toughest challenges and her greatest strengths, which are all controlled by a roll of the die. The game board features familiar characters and locations from the hit TV show, like Sunnydale High School and the Sunnydale cemetery. An extra-cool addition is the Buffy playing piece made of solid pewter. --Diane Beall

Motorific - car road set
This is a car set where the car is driven by two AA batteries sitting on a chassis, covered by a changable body, running along grooved road plates, held in place by a guide pin on the chassis. My first set was salvaged (scavanged) from a pile of toys being thrown out by neighbors - can you just imagine throwing out perfectly good toys? A travesty. In the last 30 years, i've been buying up other sets and cars and pieces, just ready for the day when I can lay out my hundreds of pieces of track and let the cars go racing around, narrowly, or not so, avoiding collisions. Alas, that day hasn't come yet, I just don't have enough free space to set up a track and leave it out for any length of time. One day, tho......

Erector Set - my first set actually belonged to my dad, and it's a nice 1940's solid sturdy all metal set. It will be moving onto my nephews once they are old enough to hold the little screws in their hands. It brought me hours of funs and entertainment, not to mention getting an early grasp of how structural and mechanical things work
