Aloha Alumni and Friends,

Here is a message from Bill Fernandez, president of our KSAA Northern Cal Region. We are forwarding information about a tour for teenage Hawaiian girls to travel to London and Paris in 2004, following the travels of Princess Ka'iulani. The tour leader is a writer/poet from Berkeley (from Hawaii) who will lead them in writing a journal which will eventually be published.

Aloha...Howard Fuller

In 2004 in collaboration with Alta Mira Press which will publish the writings and assisted by the Native Hawaiian Library, Carolyn Lei-lanilau will lead a writing tour Hulipiha Mele o Pikake a Europa, Tracing the Scent of Pikake in Europe. The intent of the program is that Native Hawaiian youth will create and document their own literature. Approximately ten days, the tour revisits cultural and historical landmarks in London and Paris where Princess Ka'iulani went to school and also toured. There will be two public presentations by the participants: one at the American Library in Paris; the other at Great Harrowden Hall or Royal Festival Hall in London.

Native Hawaiian women between the ages of fifteen to eighteen may apply for one of the coveted positions. If you love adventure, language(s) and want to be part of a historic event that creates literature for Native Hawaiian youth, please contact Carolyn Lei-lanilau for details. She may be reached by email: [email protected] or by phone at 510-658-5378. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2003. There are two Selection Committees: one in Honolulu and the other in the Bay Area.
