This is an advanced notice to tell you that the Intermountain Region will sponsor "Explorations in Utah 2003" on Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the Granite High School facility, Salt Lake City. A full description of our program for 2003 will be available on May 15. Application forms will also be available then.

Summer Program for Utah High School Students
The University of Utah is organizing a new pre-engineering summer program for high school students called Hi-TECH (Teaching Engineering Concepts in High School). This program is designed specifically to encourage ethnic minority students to explore the career options available to them in engineering.
Hi-TECH is for students entering 10th, 11th and 12th grades in the fall, and will give them exposure to a variety of engineering and computer science careers with hands-on, interactive activities. To help support their education, participants will have the opportunity to earn scholarships to the University of Utah to study engineering.
Hi-TECH will be held June 18, 19 & 20, 2003. The deadline for submitting a nomination application is Friday, May 9.
The cost for this program is $30.00 for all three days (including lunch). However, if families are unable to afford this, scholarships are available from the School of Engineering. Transportation can also be arranged, if necessary.
If you are interested, please contact me as quickly as possible and I will get you a nomination application packet.

INTERMOUNTAIN REGION NEWS
We obtained non-profit tax-exempt status for the Intermountain Region in the states of Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada. The latter three states filed as Sub-Regions.
We hosted the Kamehameha Schools Strategic Planning Team, Charlene Hoe and Judy Layfield, in Hawaiian community townhall meetings in Las Vegas (Apr. 18), Salt Lake City (Apr. 20), and Denver (Apr. 22).
The Arizona Sub-Region sponsored a KSAA information booth during the 8th Annual Aloha Festival on Mar. 16 & 17. Each year the festival's "Kokua Award" is presented to an individual who continues to make significant contributions to the Polynesian/Micronesian community within the Greater Phoenix area. This year's award went to Benny Stillman, Class of '59.
The Colorado Sub-Region continues to sponsor the "College Homes Away from Home" program for young Kamehameha alumni attending school within the Colorado area. Toni is also continuing her plans to sponsor hula shows to raise operating and scholarship funds.
Planning for "Explorations in Utah" is in full swing. JOur event will be held July 19-21, 2002 at Camp Kostopulos, two miles east of Salt Lake City in Emigration Canyon. The theme for this event is "Behold Hawai'i." Kaipo Hale and Violet-Marie Rosehill from the Kamehameha School's Extension Education Division, will present the story of "Behold Hawai'i." For more information, contact Ron Yasukawa at (801) 451-7312.
OUR INTERMOUNTAIN WEBSITE
Have you visited our KSAA Intermountain Region website recently? If you have forgotten its address, it is at http://www.geocities.com/ksaaim . Kalani O'Sullivan '63 is our webmaster and a life member in our Region. As Kalani says, "Hele mai."
You should also visit our KSAA website at http://www.imua-kamehameha.net/ . This website is maintained by the KSAA East Coast Region. From this KSAA website, you will be able to navigate to all the KSAA Region websites (eventually). At least the Intermountain Region works.
Soon you will be able to access all KSAA websites directly from the Kamehameha Schools website at http://www.ksbe.edu/ . The KSAA Board of Presidents is working with the Kamehameha Schools to host all KSAA Region websites under the Kamehameha Schools website. Prototypes of the new KSAA Region websites should be accessible in August 2002. The advantages of hosting all KSAA Region websites under the Kamehameha Schools website are that a common Region webpage template can be used, information on Region alumni will be accessible directly from the Kamehameha Schools alumni database versus each Region maintaining their own database, and Kamehameha Schools news and activities will be more readily available.
HAVE YOU MOVED or planning to move?
Please send me your new address: KSAA Intermountain, 1351 Swinton Lane, Farmington, UT 84025
The Kamehameha Schools alumni policy has finally been revised. If you send a short email to Gerry Johansen mailto:[email protected] and Kehau Yap mailto:[email protected] with info to Leilani Fortuno mailto:[email protected] they will make the necessary updates to the official alumni database.
KSAA BOARD OF PRESIDENTS (BOP) NEWS
The Presidents from each KSAA Region meet quarterly to conduct business pertinent to the KSAA. The last meeting occurred April 26-27 in San Diego, CA; the meeting was hosted by the KSAA Southern California Region (John Kaulukukui '71, Pres.).
The primary focus of this meeting was to train the Region Presidents for launching the collaborative effort between the KSAA, the Kamehameha Schools and SMS Research on the Native Hawaiian Community Survey. The training was conducted by Daniel Naho'opi'i '84, from SMS Research, and Ramona Hao, from the Kamehameha Schools PASE office.
Two additional areas of focus by the KSAA BOP are the completion of the new KSAA Region websites under the Kamehameha Schools website and the submission of the plan to create a national alumni organization versus the regional structure which currently exists.
The next KSAA BOP meeting is scheduled for August 2-3 in Honolulu.
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE AND RENEWALS
We have a common bond. We are alumni of the Kamehameha Schools. When people ask me what I do in my spare time, I tell them I play golf, try to keep my home in working order and clean, but most of my spare time is dedicated to working as the president of my high school alumni association. I tell them about who we are and what we do and they are amazed that a high school can continue to influence the lives of its alumni after so many years.
I belong to my college alumni associations and I participate occasionally in several of their alumni activities. However, being a member of the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association is special because it is about my heritagemy cultureand an association with my extended family who have also benefited from the opportunities gained from our high school education and experiences.
The following are fair questions to askWhy should I join the KSAA Intermountain Region and pay annual or life dues when I can receive the IMUA magazine each quarter, receive the KSAA Intermountain Region newsletter, have access to the various KSAA websites, and receive emails on Hawaiiana news/events or scholarship opportunitiesat no cost. What benefits are in it for me since I do not live near our Region's major cities and therefore I cannot participate in potlucks, socials, or other activities.
I truly do not have a punch-line answer for these questions. However, I can state that being an annual or life member of the KSAA Intermountain Region simply says that you can support the continuing activities of our alumni 'ohana and that you recognize it takes operating funds to keep our organization functioning. Being an annual or life member of the KSAA Intermountain Region will allow our organization to occasionally offset fixed costs, such as non-profit registration fees or facility rentals associated with our alumni activities. Being an annual or life member of the KSAA Intermountain Region will help offset the cost of each newsletter mailing. Yes, we could choose to send information to only our active members at a cost of around $34.00 per mailing, or we can continue to keep all our Region's alumni informed at a cost of around $134.00 per bulk mailing. Being an annual or life member of the KSAA Intermountain Region will allow our organization to engage in fund-raisers; the primary beneficiaries from our fund-raisers will be students who wish to continue with their higher education or to offset expenses of our keiki who wish to attend the Explorations program.
Our membership dues are $12.00 per year for alumni, $6.00 per year for associate members (non-alumni spouses and friends of Kamehameha Schools), free for active, full-time alumni students attending colleges and universities, and $200.00 for an alumni life membership.
If you have not yet joined, please consider becoming a KSAA member of the Intermountain Region. If you are a current member, please consider renewing your membership. Contact me at: mailto:[email protected]

ROY HUSSEY
(1945-2003)

Roy was a Past President, Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association -- Intermountain Region. He was one of the "founding fathers" of our organization. An active member to the end, he was involved in all facets of KSAA-IM activities. We owe him a deep debt of gratitude. He will be missed.
He was a Psychotherapist at the LDS Hospital (SLC, Utah) with his own private consultation offices. A community leader, he was deeply involved in Polynesian cultural events. On the side, Roy performed music with his "Pacific Paradise" Review.
On January 20, 2003, his wife, Diana Hussey wrote, "This is just to let you know that Roy passed away today at around noon, surrounded by all the family members. ... His passing was peaceful and in the company of his children, brother and sister in law and nieces and nephews. ... Thank you all for your prayers and faith. It helped make the end peaceful and acceptable for us. Love, Dianna"
Roy is survived by his wife Diana, two children and grandchildren.
