SONS OF HAWAII

Composers: William Brewster/Theodore Richards

Be strong and ally ye, oh sons of Hawaii
And nobly stand together hand in hand
All dangers defy ye, oh sons of Hawaii
And bravely serve your own your Fathers Land

Ring, ring, Kalihi ring
Swell the echo of our song
Ray, ray, ray, ray, ray, rah
Ray ray Kamehameha
Let hills and valleys loud our song prolong

Be firm and deny ye, oh sons of Hawaii
Allurements that your race will overwhelm
Be true and rely ye, oh sons of Hawaii
Oh God, the prop and pillar of your realm

Ring, ring, Kalihi ring
Swell the echo of our song
Ray, ray, ray, ray, ray, rah
Ray ray Kamehameha
Let hills and valleys loud our song prolong

Hawai`i Aloha

This is one of the many songs composed by the Reverend Lorenzo Lyons, known as Makua Laiana, who had a church for many years at Waimea, Hawai`i. He died in 1886.

A variant title for the song is "Ku`u One Hanau." The song is so popular with Hawaiians that the melody is used in other songs. Hawai`i Aloha is commonly sung in a circle, with hands raised overhead at the conclusion of the final refrain.

E Hawai`i, e ku`u one hanau e
Ku`u home kulaiwi nei
`Oli no au i na pono lani e
E Hawai`i, aloha e
O Hawaii, O sands of my birth
My native home
I rejoice in the blessings of heaven
O Hawaii, aloha

Hui Chorus:

E hau`oli na `opio o Hawai`i nei
`Oli e! `Oli e!
Mai na aheahe makani e pa mai nei
Mau ke aloha, no Hawai`i
Happy youth of Hawaii
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Gentle breezes blow
Love always for Hawaii

E ha`i mai kou mau kini lani e
Kou mau kupa aloha, e Hawai`i
Na mea `olino kamaha`o no luna mai
E Hawai`i, aloha e
May your divine throngs speak
Your loving people, O Hawaii
The holy light from above
O Hawaii, aloha

Na ke Akua e malama mai ia `oe
Kou mau kualono aloha nei
Kou mau kahawai `olinolino mau
Kou mau mala pua nani e
God protects you
Your beloved ridges
Your ever glistening streams
Your beautiful flower gardens

HAWAI`I '78

Composer: Mickey Ioane

Performed by: Na Wai Ho'olu'u O Ke Anuenue/Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau/Iz Kamakawiwo'ole

Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i

If just for a day our king and queen
Would visit all these islands and saw everything
How would they feel about the changes of our land

Could you just imagine if they were around
And saw highways on their sacred grounds
How would they feel about this modern city life

Tears would come from each others eyes
As they would stop to realize
That our people are in great great danger now
How, would they feel, could their smiles be content, then cry

Chorus:

Cry for the gods, cry for the people
Cry for the land that was taken away
And then yet you'll find, Hawai'i

Could you just imagine they came back
And saw traffic lights and railroad tracks
How would they feel about this modern city life

Tears would come from each others eyes
As they would stop to realize
That our land is in great great danger now

All the fighting that the king had done
To conquer all these islands now these condominiums
How would he feel if he saw Hawai'i nei
How, would he feel, would his smile be content, then cry

Chorus
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i

I KA LA `APOPO (TOMORROW)

Composer: Keith Haugen
("Ukulele Lady" CD - 1995)

This song was the first place winner in the 1993 Friends of the Royal Hawaiian Band's ho`okuku mele for new Hawaiian lyric songs about the 1893 overthrow and sovereignty.

E ala e na Hawai`i, e ala e na pua
E koi mai `oukou i na mea e pono ai
Rise up Hawaiians, rise up descendants
Claim your rightful things

Ue na kanaka no ko lakou ali`i
Ue lakou no ke kahuli `ana
Ua hala lakou a me ka mo`i
Koe ka `aina nei wale no ho`i
The people cry for their queen
They cry because of the overthrow
They have passed on, also the monarch
Indeed, only the land remains

Ue ka `oiwi no kona mea nui
Ue `o ia no ka mea nalowale
Ue `o ia no na `eha o ka `aina
Koe na `eha o keia la
The native cries for his important thing
He cries for the thing which was lost
He cries for the hurts of the land
The hurts of today remain

E ala e na Hawai`i, e ala e na pua
E koi mai `oukou i na mea e pono ai
Rise up Hawaiians, rise up descendants
Claim your rightful things

Hu mai ke aloha no keia `aina nei
Mai ke kahuli `ana a ke ea hou
E ku hou ana na keiki o ka `aina
A kahea no ke ku`oko`a
Love for this land swells forth
From the overthrow until the new independence
The children of the land will rise up again
And call out for freedom

Pono kakou e malama i ka `aina
Pono kakou e kako`o i na pua
E `imi a loa`a ka ha`ina pono
E ho`i ana ke ea i ka la `apopo
We should care for the land
We should support the children
Search and find the right solution
Sovereignty will return tomorrow

E ala e na Hawai`i, e ala e na pua
E koi mai `oukou i na mea e pono ai
Rise up Hawaiians, rise up descendants
Claim your rightful things

E ho`i ana ke ea i ka la `apopo
E ho`i ana ke ea i ka la `apopo.
Sovereignty will return tomorrow
Sovereignty will return tomorrow.
