Pozzuoli, Cuma, and Solfatara

"This is the stuff of legends.  See the site of the Cumaean Sybil, who was granted eternal life by a god who was infatuated by her.  Visit one of the largest and most important amphitheaters in Italy dating from the times of Vespasian.  Visit the extinct volcano of Solfatara, that still puts on a show with jets of steam charged with sulfurous fumes and miniature volcanoes that spit hot mud.  You will understand why Dante called this place "the Gate of Hell.""  -- ITT Brochure

The ruins at Cuma.  According to mythology, this is the location where Icarus fell when he flew too close to the sun with his wings made from feathers and wax.  His father built a temple here to apologize to Apollo (god of the sun).

Below the Anfiteatro Flavio in Pozzuoli.  The "skylights" were used to raise animals into the arena for the gladiators to fight.  There was another floor between the one visible in the pictures and the holes in the ceiling.  The support columns are lying on the ground.

Boiling mud at the Solfatara volcanic crater.

Inside the Solfatara crater (left).  Gennario stirs up steam near the vents by waving a smoldering newspaper near them (middle).  He also sells volcanic rocks from the crater (right).
