Herculaneum
Herculaneum was one of the major cities in Italy destroyed by
the eruption of Mount Vesuvio (Vesuvius) in 79 A.D. This city, unlike
Pompei, received the main blast from the lava, which incinerated
everything. Pompei was covered in ash, while Herculaneum was covered in
mud and lava. This pyroclastic material hardened and made later
excavations very difficult. That is why Herculaneum is not as well preserved as
Pompei.
