Pompeii Amphitheater Tour

"Join Aldo and visit the ruins of Pompeii, which were buried in 79 AD by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.  The city had everything - outdoor theaters, banks, bars, public baths, health clinics, and brothels.  After the tour, visit a Cameo factory for a unique demonstration by skilled artisans."  -- ITT Day Tour Brochure

For pictures of the Cameo factory, look at the Herculaneum link.

There are two tours of Pompeii - Marina Gate and Amphitheater.  Sometimes a third tour is offered, but we haven't seen it listed in the year that we've been in Italy. There is also "Pompeii at Night", a multimedia presentation offered only in November and April.  Tickets go quickly for it though, so it's best to get them early.  It's offered in different languages, so if you're multi-lingual you'll have a better chance of getting tickets.

The "Garden of Fugitives".  These figures are plaster casts of people who died in 79 AD during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvio.  During the excavations of ancient Pompeii, archeologists found hollow cavities and soon realized that they were left when the bodies (buried under nearly 20 feet of ash) decomposed.  It is believed that this group was a family and the figure on the left was the father, who was trying to yell commands or comfort the family as they perished in the suffocating ash and toxic gas.  Lava never reached Pompeii like it did Herculaneum.  The citizens of Pompeii died from suffocation as fine ash and pumice, which contained toxic gas, rained down and buried the town.
