About the Poet

Jocelyn is a 16-year-old sophomore in high school. She lives in a small, boring, faceless town in north-central Ohio. Jocelyn was born in Ogden, Utah. She has two younger brothers, named Dylan {age 9} and Danny {age 6} and lives with them and her mother. While her father may not be physically dead, he is dead to Jocelyn in all ways, and she has not seen him since she was nine.

Jocelyn grew up with a deep love for reading. If there were words on something, she would read it. She began writing songs and the lyrics to go with them in the 3rd grade when she and two classmates formed a "band" called New Girls on the Block. A couple of years later, she wrote her very first poem at the age of 11 in the 5th grade. The poem that got her hooked on writing poetry was entitled "Heart of a Rockstar" and written in 1999 to go with a picture of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter looking at himself in a mirror. She was trying to convey the pain and loneliness celebrities must feel, being in the spotlight all the time. She was impressed by what she had written, and kept on writing. During the summer after her 6th grade year, Jocelyn began having trouble with depression. She began writing poetry almost every day to try and convey the feelings and pain she was feeling. This continued, and her poetry became an outlet for her emotions -- as it should always be for anyone who writes.

As far as Jocelyn's personality goes, she is an emotional drama queen. She is very passionate about what she believes in and loves, and will go to the ends of the earth to defend those things when they are threatened. She hates mindless conformity and prefers to just be herself and like and do whatever she wants -- whether it's what everyone else is doing or not. Jocelyn can be mean sometimes to her family, but she is typically a nice person to most everyone she meets. While she does hold a certain grudge against people as a whole, Jocelyn feels that people are just people, and they can't help that, so they should be given at least a second chance before being written off as useless. She is semi-bossy, very creative, and determined to get what she wants. Jocelyn has a very large sense of humor, and she is also very easily provoked into tears -- in fact, many commercials have caused her to soak a couple of tissues in salt-water.

Jocelyn's favourite hobbies include writing poetry and fiction, just plain writing, reading, singing, listening to music of all kinds, dreaming, spending time with her friends, being online, web design, graphic making, zines, watching movies, and debating. She loves Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Johnny Depp, Lord of the Rings, Inu-Yasha, cartoons, the Disney Channel, SimCity3000, and Tropico.

Her favourite bands/musical artists include: Something Corporate, Hanson, Saves the Day, the Ataris, the Starting Line, Our Lady Peace, Savage Garden, Michelle branch, the Goo Goo Dolls, Vanessa Carlton, Lifehouse, Blink 182, Green Day, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Nine Days, New Found Glory, Finch, Bouncing Souls, the Movielife, the Beatles, Journey, and Steve Perry.
