September 11, 2002

Today I'll be in mourning
Tomorrow, wear all black.
Yesterday, life moved more slowly
Than before it ever had.
It's hard to believe a year's gone by
Since our world stopped and fell apart.
Though we've built it back up,
We're still taping together
The pieces of America's broken heart.

Today's the day I cry -- forever.
Every day I ask the question, "Why?"
Does it still feel like a dream?
To me, it does.
More like a nightmare of ashes,
Of fire and dust,
Of people and airplanes,
Of buildings, love, and broken-trust.
Now me tears are stained with blood.

If only words could make it better
If they could ease away the pain,
And the firemen, police, and people
Who we'll never see again.
If only words could make them reappear,
Put them back inside their town,
Inside the towers, anywhere but in the ground.

Today is the day our lives changed,
Some for better, some for worse.
But forever will we all remember
Tuesday, September the 11th.

It's obvious what this poem is dedicated to. It's cheesy and the subject is overdone, but I was feeling a lot on that day. And even though most of my feelings about the government and this country have changed since then, this poem still makes me cry when I read it.
