The beginning
At the very beginning of the series, Eugene (Urameshi Yusuke), a 14 year old high school student, died in a car accident trying to save a young boy's life. Eugene's spirit went to a place called the Spirit World (Reikai), the place where all spirits go. Jericho (Koenma Daiou), the son of the great Enma Daiou and the officer in-charge with the judgement of the spirits, told Eugene that Eugene's death was unexpected. Eugene was given another chance to live, but he had to pass a test in order to do so. Upon passing the test, Eugene became a detective for the Spirit World. |

| Eugene soon began going into missions. But before that, he was given detective items to aid him in his quests. He also received the Rei Gun (Spirit Gun) technique from Jericho, but he could only use it once a day to prevent him from being totally drained. Alfred (Kazuma Kuwabara) also became his close friend because they were rivals.

Eugene's early mission
Eugene is guided by Charlene (Botan), the diety of Death and a messenger of Jericho. She becomes his adviser and friend, helping him in his missions. Charlene gives Eugene his first mission. Eugene's first mission was to retrieve the three artifacts of the Spirit World that were stolen by Jerry (Gouki), Vincent (Jaganashi Hiei), and Dennis (Kurama). The three items possessed different powers. One artifact was the Sword of the Spirit World, which turns anything it destroys into demons (youkais). Another artifact was the Magical mirror which grants the wielder any wish he wants in exchange for a life. The other artifact is a Magical Orb, which gave the holder the power to steal the souls of humans. |

| Eugene first fought Jerry, a demon who ate the souls of little children. Eugene had difficulty defeated Jerry because Jerry's body was as tough as steel. Eugene's punches did not affect Jerry. Eugene thought of a plan to use his Rei Gun against Jerry. But since his body was tough as steel, Eugene would have to fire it at Jerry's weak spot. He thought of Jerry's mouth, and when Jerry opened his mouth, Eugene inserted his finger and fired his Rei Gun. After, the souls of all the children returned back to their bodies and the magic orb was secured. |

| Even though weak and tired, Eugene set out to find the second treasure. When he went back to down, Dennis appeared in the middle of the crowd. Dennis called out to him through telepathy. He said for Eugene to go to the city hospital in 3 days time, when the moon is full. He would surrender the mirror to Eugene then. |

Three days had passed and the sun is about to set. Dennis is told by the doctor that his mother's state has gone critical and that nothing they could do could save her. He goes to the rooftop to meet Eugene. Dennis explains that he needed the mirror to make a wish to save his mother. The mirror would grant any wish in exchange for the life of the person who made the wish. Dennis said he would return the mirror after he made the wish. Dennis started to invoke the power of mirror and said he wished that his mother be saved. The mirror told him that his would is required to grant the wish, and Dennis says he accepts. Seeing how unselfish Dennis was, Eugene told the mirror to take his life instead. He told Dennis he could not bear to see a mother separated from her child, so he said he would take Dennis's place. Surprised, the mirror granted Dennis's wish without taking his life, saying that since both of them were unselfish, it would grant their wish. Dennis's mother came back to health once more and Dennis gave the mirror to Eugene.

Vincent finds out that Eugene had recovered the two treasures. Realizing that he cared for Jenny (Keiko), he kidnapped Jenny and told Eugene to meet him at a warehouse with the two treasures. They would be making a trade : Jenny for the two treasures. When Eugene and Charlene went to the warehouse, Vincent confronted them demanding for the two treasures if Jenny was to be released. Eugene hands over the treasures and Jenny is let go to the ground. When Vincent takes the treasures, he tells Eugene and Charlene to look closely at her forehead. To their surprise, they see a third eye, bearly open. Charlene says this is the work of the Evil Sword, saying that once the eye opens, Jenny would forever be under Vincent's control. The only cure would be for the elixir found inside the sword. Jenny would have to take it before the eye opens. Eugene engages Vincent in combat, but he is seriously disadvantaged because of Vincent's speed. Eugene manages to hit Vincent twice only, and this is when Vincent decides to go into his alter form (Jaganashi form) by opening his third eye.

Eugene is given a much harder time when Vincent is in his other form. When Vincent is about to make an attack, Dennis appears to defend Eugene, and his rose whip manages to hit Vincent's third eye. Vincent is only momentarily stunned. Eugene asks why Dennis is here, and Dennis replies that he is only doing this as a thank you for saving both his and his mother's lives. Eugene fires his Rei Gun but Vincent manages to evade it. However, the Rei Gun is deflected by the magic mirror and the rei gun hits Vincent in the back. The mirror shatters and Vincent lets go of the sword, this time falling unconscious. The sword is worn and becomes rusty (after having used its powers) and Charlene uses the elixir to close Jenny's third eye. He hands all the treasures to Charlene who brings them back to Jericho. When Jericho receives the treasures, he is worried about how to explain the two treasure's conditions. When his father found out that the robbery had taken place, he gave Jericho his punishment: a great big spanking.

Jeremiah's competition
After the mission, Eugene is invited to partake in a competition of Master Jeremiah (Genkai), where the winner will be trained rigorously under her and earn her Spirit Wave Technique (Reik-kou-hadou-ken). Eugene had no interest of joining the competition until he was offered tickets to the World Fighting Championships. When Eugene goes to Jeremiah's temple, he accidentally bumps into Alfred, who said he joined the competition because someone told him Jeremiah would help him grow stronger. Jeremiah comes out of the temple, and Eugene is shocked to see an old woman, expecting someone younger. Jeremiah announced to the hundreds of participants to take an envelope from a huge cauldron. If they had a red paper inside the envelope, they were qualified. When it was blue, they should just go home and forget about it. Secretly though, Jeremiah had cast a spell on the papers to turn red if the holder was qualified and strong enough to partake in the competition. Alfred and Eugene were qualified and the competition starts.

The first match was an arcade and song competition. They would have to beat the computer players in the video games to proceed to the next level. After they won, they would have to sing a song to determine their strength (and perhaps their ability to withhold embarrasment). The second match was a race. One would have to make it through a thick forest to reach the finish line. Jeremiah gave them a time limit and started the race. All the others were running in zig-zags, knowing that the straight path would be the most tricky. Eugene took the straight path and he encountered a lot of tricks. Alfred made it to the finish line first, then a few others followed. The time was over and yet Eugene was nowhere to be seen. After a few seconds, however, Eugene came running. Jeremiah said he was too late but he explained that he was held up because he fought a bat-creature. Jeremiah was surprised, as the bat-creature was the bat king. No one had ever defeated the bat king yet, so Eugene was given an exception.

Their next match was a fight in the dark. All the remaining fighters had to fight one of them in the dark. Alfred was faced with Musashi, a samurai with a wooden sword. Alfred is given a very difficulty time, especially since he had no special powers. In one of his blocks, Musashi's sword broke in two. Enraged, he goes to finish off Alfred. Desperate, Alfred takes hold of the broken sword and for the first time calls out the Spiritual Sword (Rei ken). Alfred uses his new-found power to defeat Musashi. He swings his sword and it cuts through Musashi's spiritual core and he is defeated. Alfred's sword is made of Spiritual Energy focused into a sword of light. It passes through a person's body, cutting the evil soul or its spiritual core.

Eugene faces Arturo (Kibano / Sabano). Arturo uses a magical mask to see through the darkness. The mask can also analyze a person's abilities, skill, and weaknesses, thus giving the user knowledge of how to combat his enemy. Eugene is given a hard time, until he places a lighted candle on Arturo's belt. Eugene aims for the candle and fires his Rei Gun. The mask is taken off and Arturo is defeated.

After the fight in the darkness, Alfred and Eugene became finalists for the competition. Benjo (Rando / Shourin) was also a finalist. Alfred first fought Benjo, and thought he would win. Benjo used the power of the Elder Spirits to shrink Alfred. Alfred became smaller, about half-a-foot tall. Benjo then crushed Alfred and he won. It was then Eugene's turn to fight Benjo. The winner would be Jeremiah's successor. Eugene gives Benjo a bit of a hard time, and that is when Benjo reveals his true form. Benjo is an ancient demon who came from the Netherworld. He sent out to get Jeremiah's Spirit Wave Technique because that was a feared power in the Netherworld (Makai). When he would return with the technique, he would be feared as well. Realizing his evil and selfish motives, Jeremiah hoped that Eugene would win, for when the Spirit Wave technique would fall in the wrong hands, it would become a disaster. Benjo tries to shrink Eugene, but Eugene had some dirt in his ears. The spell backfires and Benjo is shrunk. Jeremiah explains that the caster of the spell must invoke the spell on someone who can listen to it, else the caster will be affected by the spell. Eugene falls on Benjo and he wins.

Eugene then receives the training from Master Jeremiah. He is trained very hard. He is taught how to control the Rei Gun and the Spirit Wave technique. At times, Eugene would lose his patience and attack Jeremiah instead. However, each time he did this, Jeremiah would return the favor tenfold. Six months had passed and they became close with each other. Eugene learned most of her styles and techniques.

The four demons
One day, Jericho receives a letter from the Four Sacred Demons (Shiseijuu). They demand that they be allowed to stay in the Human world or they would continue to release hundreds of insects that would mind-control its victims. When infected, they would destroy each other. Lazarus had a magical whistle that would control these insects. Jericho is worried and sends Charlene to inform Eugene of the situation.Charlene tells Eugene that Jericho needs his help to deal with the demons. Eugene accepts and Alfred tags along. Soon after, Vincent and Dennis joins them. They were sent now as Spirit World Detectives as punishment for their crimes. When they reached the demon's hideout, Lazarus (Suzaku) learned of the Spirit World Detectives. He then sent to capture Jenny to get to Eugene. When they stepped closer, they see that many people have already been infected. Charlene sets to rescue Jenny and stayed with her.

Inside, the team fight the demons. Alfred challenges White Tiger (Byako), a giant cat with a terrible attitude. Alfred manages to win by tricking White Tiger to fall of a cliff. Dennis next challenges Genbu, a rock demon. Dennis defeats him by taking away his power gem, the main source of power using the rose whip. Vincent fights Blue Dragon (Seiruu). Vincent easily defeats him by slashing Blue Dragon with his katana 16 times in a fraction of a second. Eugene then challenges the leader, Lazarus, and is given quite a hard time. Fortunately, Jeremiah tagged along and helped him through mind conversation with Alfred's help. Eugene manages to win and takes the whistle from Lazarus

Mikaella
Jericho then sends a video tape containing a new mission to Vincent for Eugene. Eugene views the tape with Alfred and discovers that there were people torturing a young girl named Mikaela (Yukina) in a mansion. Their purpose was to make Mikaela cry to produce valuable white pearls for money. At first, Alfred decided not to go on the mission until he saw the captured girl. He was instantaneously blinded with love and hurries Eugene to go on with their quest. On their way to the fortress, they meet the Don Paquito's (Tarukane's) guardians, Melanie (Miyuki), Miku, and Goliath (Gokumonki). Melanie is actually a guy pretending to be a female (sort of a homosexual gay). Eugene is sure that Melanie is a guy and is assured when he touched Melanie's private parts. Miku and Goliath have their share but they are defeated.

Inner into the fortress, they then encounter the Toguro brothers, Toguro Ototo (the big, younger one with a lot of muscles) and Toguro Ani (the smaller, elder of the two) where it took some time for them to defeat the two muscly brothers. Eugene and Alfred used every bit of their powers to try to stop them. Fortunately, they triumphed when Eugene used his Rei Gun to push Alfred with his Spirit Sword. The combined forces of the Spirit Sword and the Rei Gun blast the brothers. However, unknown to them, they had intentionally set out to lose to them, merely testing their abilities. Inside the fortress, they rescue Mikaela and Vincent and Dennis finish off the human mastermind, Don Paquito. It is at that time it was revealed that Mikaela is actually Vincent's long lost younger sister. Unfortunately, Vincent does not tell this to her, only mentioning that he is a friend. Charlene escorts her to the Netherworld once more, her true home.

| In the event, Toguro Ani challenges Eugene to join the Black Martial Arts Tournament (Ankoku Bujutsukai) to see whether they were really strong. Eugene accepts the offer and Toguro Ani vanishes. |
