Movies

Go to my page on Zhang Yimou (Chinese film director extrordinaire).
Also take a look at my page on Gong Li, his gifted and beautiful leading lady.

I have a movie poll that I would like you to try out. To see the results of this poll, click here.

I like movies. Everyone likes some movies, of course, but I am different from most. I like good movies. I like movies that have a reason for existing other than to make globs of money/show things exploding/show how angsty the director is/show naked people. It doesn't matter to me if a movie does one (or all) of these things, but it has to have something more. That 'something more' can be any one of a number of things (humor, entertainment, shedding light on the fundemental state of humanity, or what-have-you), but it must exist for me to even consider liking it. Unfortunately, many people seem to think that a good movie is one that a)everybody has seen, b)shows pretty people, and c)pulls shamelessly and clumsily on the audience's emotions. These same people often think that if a movie doesn't advertize, it can't be good. These people are wrong! I and my revolutionary compadres in the William and Mary Film Society attempt to subvert the dominant paradigm. We endeavor to show good movies! VIVA LA REVOLUCION!

Seriously though, I do get fed up with most of the shlock that is available to the movie (film or video) going public. Our Super-Mega-Multiplexes and chain video stores tend to all carry the same stuff. It is difficult and annoying(though becoming less so) to find anything but the run-of-the-mill. It takes time and skill (not to mention good taste). This is not to say that it can't be done. To prove this, I have done it. At the bottom of this page is a random list of some of my favorite movies.

I have also provided some of my favorite film related links. These are my faithful stand-bys.
