English
is taught in grades 1 to 11, German and French are taught in grades 5 to
11, Korean is a compulsory subject in grades 5 to 6 and optional for
pupils in grades 7 to 10. The
Lyceum pupils have good and excellent knowledge, experience and skills

can dispute their views. The
foreign languages teachers have good language training and carry out
creative work to elaborate the test system for pupils’ knowledge and
skills checkup. Communication exercises, role games, conferences and
debates are used during the lessons. When choosing teaching materials
our teachers use modern British and American educational resources. In
grades 8 to 11 out students have the course of
literature and country study of English-speaking countries (Great
Britain and USA), where they have the opportunity to get acquainted with
the history, culture, geography, customs and traditions of the
English-speaking countries. For 9 years the courses of American Literature and Country Study have been taught by an American, the courses of British Literature and Country Study were taught by the students of British Universities who participated in a program TEACHING ABROAD.
The
debating club is popular among the students of the Lyceum as well among
the students from other schools and colleges. Debating
Club PANDORA was founded in 1994 in Klovskiy Lyceum with the
support of “Renascence” fund. The first to head the newly
established club were English teachers Jamie Taber and Zoya Gulko. In 1995 the team from the
lyceum debating club became the first team to represent Ukraine at the
first European
contest in summer (Hungary, 1995). Over
the last years few debating movement spread quickly throughout Ukraine.
The members of our club represent Kyiv at All-Ukrainian
debating tournament annually. Many of our debators were
marked out among the best speakers of Ukraine. Our
debators have achieved high results at the international tournaments in
Bulgaria, Estonia and Lithuania.
The
year 1999 was also marked by another outstanding event. Pandora won the Project of the Co-operation with the USA Schools Contest.
Ten students from Klovskiy Lyceum #77 took park in this exchange
program.
In
spring of 1999 they welcomed students and teachers from Cherry
Creek
High
School,
Colorado, and in fall they had studied at this American High school for
three weeks, winning admiration and respect of all Americans they
socialized with. In 1998 a debating program for primary and senior school pupils (form 2 to 7) started. And at the first city tournament a pupil of the 5th form won the first prize among the best speakers together with the boy from the 7th form who was the best at the All-Ukrainian tournament for juniors. On
June, 6, 2000 the president
of the lyceum debating club Kateryna Yasko greeted the US President
William Jefferson Clinton on the Mykhaylivska Sq., Kyiv. The
participants of the debating club have grown before our eyes. When
they first came at the debating meeting they were afraid to say
something. And now they are able to adduce so many proofs that it’d be
wiser to make for time out. This competitions and tournaments help you both to see yourself and understand the others. Debating teaches to respect alternate conception, it teaches tolerance. In fact debate is an attempt to look evenly at the problems from different points of view. Debating is the future in the development of democracy. Every year 20-25 students win in the Pechersk district English language Olimpiad. 10 -15 students win in the English language Olimpiad among the best students of Kyiv. 1-2 students are the winners in the Ukrainian English language Olimpiad. Olga Smirnova, Tatyana Bersheda, Alexandra Andrusik, Darya Panchenko were the best students and winners of the All Ukrainian Olimpiad.
