Debating Club PANDORA

The debating club is popular among the students of the Lyceum as well among the students from other schools and colleges.

Debating Club PANDORA was founded in 1994 in Klovskiy Lyceum with the support of “Renascence” fund. The first to head the newly established club were English teachers Jamie Taber and Zoya Gulko.

In 1995 the team from the lyceum debating club became the first team to represent Ukraine at the first European contest in summer (Hungary, 1995).

Over the last years few debating movement spread quickly throughout Ukraine. The members of our club represent Kyiv at All-Ukrainian debating tournament annually. Many of our debators were marked out among the best speakers of Ukraine.

Our debators have achieved high results at the international tournaments in Bulgaria, Estonia and Lithuania.

In 1999 for the first time in history Ukrainian team took part in the world tournament (Pittsburgh, USA). Ukraine was represented by our students – T. Bersheda and K. Yasko.

The year 1999 was also marked by another outstanding event. Pandora won the Project of the Co-operation with the USA Schools Contest. Ten students from Klovskiy Lyceum #77 took park in this exchange program. In spring of 1999 they welcomed students and teachers from Cherry Creek High School, Colorado, and in fall they had studied at this American High school for three weeks, winning admiration and respect of all Americans they socialized with.

In 1998 a debating program for primary and senior school pupils (form 2 to 7)  started. And at the first city tournament a pupil of the 5th form won the first prize among the best speakers together with the boy from the  7th form who was the best at the All-Ukrainian tournament for juniors.

On June, 6,  2000 the president of the lyceum debating club Kateryna Yasko greeted the US President William Jefferson Clinton on the Mykhaylivska Sq., Kyiv.

The participants of the debating club have grown before our eyes. When they first came at the debating meeting they were afraid to say something. And now they are able to adduce so many proofs that it’d be wiser to make for time out.

This competitions and tournaments help you both to see yourself and understand the others. Debating teaches to respect alternate conception, it teaches tolerance. In fact debate is an attempt to look evenly at the problems from different points of view. Debating is the future in the development of democracy.

Literary soirees

Several times annually literary soirees take place in Klovskiy Lyceum #77. They are dedicated to the work of a certain outstanding writer or poet. Among the constant participants in this unusually warm soirees are our pupils, teachers and our friends.

In Klovskiy Lyceum there are several non-political youth organizations and clubs. Among them a youth Korchak group in memory of an outstanding writer Yanush Korchak. there is also a Non-political Ukrainian Youth Organization - European Youth Parliament, which was founded by our former student Olga Smirnova in 2002. Today our students take an active part in every session of the European Youth Parliament.

Art and drama

Drama at Klovskiy Lyceum has a long tradition dating back to the early 1900s.

From the first years since the foundation of the school, teachers have been trying to develop their pupils’ love for art. The school used to have its small amateur theater and a band.

Everyone here was fond of singing. So it is obvious that this school gave birth to such world-famous singers like Maria Lytvynenko-Volhelmut and Konstantin Laptyev.

The Senior and Junior School plays performances are highlights of the school calendar.

All productions offer opportunities to pupils of all ages and are eagerly anticipated by the local community. There are not only roles for those wishing to play on the stage but a team of sound engineers and backstage assistants in the face of the students themselves who perform a worthwhile role for each production.

The Lyceum has two concert halls – the bigger one used for major lyceum occasions and another smaller one occupied mostly by the Junior school.

Both concert halls constantly boast a fine display of pupils’ achievements.

Sport

We have several gymnasiums, a hard tennis/basketball court, and a fully equipped sports complex with facilities for Gymnastics, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball and Football as well as a complete dancing complex.

All of these sports as well as Athletics and Cross Running have a loyal following. The major games are Football and Basketball for the boys, and Volleyball for the girls. P.E. is part of the curriculum for all pupils.

Klovskiy Lyceum is involved in matches among the other schools teams and the fixture list includes many of the strongest schools in Kyiv. We have a record of successes to be proud of and every year a number of pupils achieve representative in various sports.

The Lyceum sporting facilities provide different sports played by the students at Klovskiy. In addition to those mentioned before Chess, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis and Dancing are also played. Our students attend Taekwon-Do and Paintball clubs. For more detailed information about the Taekwon-Do in Ukraine, please visit this site: http://taekwon-do-wtf.narod.ru/.

Music

All pupils receive formal music tuition up to the age of 14 (for 7 years) whereupon they are able to choose Music (school Choir) as an optional subject.

Of those pupils who do not receive formal tuition after this age, many pupils are still involved in many musical groups which are popular in the Lyceum. Tutors visit the school on a regular basis to provide over half our pupils with individual, specialist instruction.

A sertain number of pupils receives individual tuition in Music such as piano for example.

In-school competitions

All pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide range of activities through their involvement with lyceum competitions. Competitions are contested in the following events: Choir, Sports and Debating.

Apart from this every year the Olympiads and contests in every subject are held among the students at Klovskiy Lyceum. The winners take further part in the district, city and All-Ukrainian contests. The history of Klovskiy have known a lot of names of great students winning the highest-rated Ukrainian and international contests.

Expeditions and tours

School expeditions, tours and visits are an excellent way of broadening the experience of members of the whole Lyceum. Both the preparation for and participation in these trips help to develop leadership, organizational and inter-personal skills.

There are expeditions to the Country Boarding School being under the patronage of Klovskiy Lyceum. These expeditions provide an opportunity for Klovskiy pupils and Staff to see monies raised by the School at various charity events in action.

In addition to these activities, various trips and weekend excursions are organized throughout the year. This includes tours organized within the classes as well as the inter-classes and inter-schools activities.

The tours vary from outdoor adventure weekends in and out side the city to long-term travels on duration up to several months.

Recent examples include holidays in France and Slovakia, tourist visits to Lviv, Saint Petersburg and Moskow, outdoor adventure weekends in Kanev, Uman, Chernihiv, theatre trips, visiting museums and galleries and tour round Kyiv – a cultural center of Ukraine. It was an experience they would never forget.

Foreign students School Life

Our students keep in touch and exchange the delegations with the students from the USA, Great Britain, Denmark, Netherlands, Poland, France, Germany, Bulgaria and other countries. A course in American Literature and Country Study was given by an American, Jamie Taber for nine years, a course in Country Study and Literature of Great Britain by Mr. Queen Ile for two years and there was also a group of students from British Universities teaching out for the program Teaching ABROAD”.

Several years ago a group of American teachers and professors came to visit Klovskiy Lyceum No.77. The same year it was visited by a number of American students. Since that time every year a group of foreign students comes to study here for a usual term of several months. In the last years Klovskiy have seen outgoing young people coming from the USA and various European countries.

When coming here such students have a good chance to learn the culture and traditions of Ukrainian people when staying with the host family, whose child studies at Klovskiy Lyceum. The pupils are encouraged to participate in all school activities ensuring  that students develop a varied range of interests and a well-rounded personality. Close consultation with other pupils, teachers and staff allows pupils a say in the selection of those. The mix of different cultures within the school broadens perspectives and promotes open mindedness.

Throughout the year, boarders are encouraged to participate in many of the activities that are offered by the school. The school's sports facilities are available out of school hours. Every student is encouraged to pursue an activity. Suggestions for new activities are always taken into consideration. In addition to these activities, trips and weekend excursions are organized throughout the year. Recent examples include outdoor adventure weekends in Kanev, Uman, Lviv, theatre trips, visiting museums and galleries and tour round Kyiv – a cultural center of Ukraine.

It is important that time spent at school is fondly remembered. Although special taster weekends are arranged during the academic year, we welcome pupils at any time.

Your Child's Well-Being

A fully qualified nursing sister is always on duty and there is a first-aid post in the main building. If  urgent treatment is needed, pupils will be serviced at school.

All the students are registered on the school medical books which are kept in and regularly reviewed by the Central District Polyclinic. Every year all our students pass a medical inspection there in order to keep every child fit.
