| My understandings regarding this Reading Specialist standard: This course has allowed me to look beyond my own classroom into the classrooms of my online peers and interpret how the use and over use of assessment plays out in the world of learning. As we have known, and this course has reinforced, we should only use formal assessment as a small piece of the educational pie in the visualization of learners, as well as how and what they have learned. A standardized test will not allow us to view their internalized understandings of how the world works, or their grasp of concepts that were once too hard for them to understand. It does not adquately measure the world of learning as a whole, but when used in combination with authentic assessment, it helps round out the areas of formal assessment. Growth of spirit, growth of self-esteem, growth unique to each learner is immeasurable to the data-driven eye. |
