Human Rights Defender at Risk of Being Killed

On October 30, 2005 after the 8:30 am Mass at the San Andres Apostol Parish in San Andres Apostol, Norzagaray, Bulacan, church volunteers were gathering the envelopes and counting the donation collected from the just concluded mass. From one of the collection bags, four envelopes were found containing a piece of paper each with the message �Isang babala para sayo: Ikaw na ang isusunod!� (�A warning for you: You�re next!�). Three of the envelopes also contained one bullet each.

On October 26, 2005, between 4:30 � 4:45pm Federico de Leon or Ka Pedy brought his common-law-wife, Ester, to the tricycle terminal in Barangay Caingin, Malolos, Bulacan where she sells cigarettes. After that he lined up his tricycle at the terminal queue. Witnesses say that a man and a woman who arrived earlier were at the food stall next to the terminal and ordered congee, but upon seeing Ka Pedy arrive, they left their barely eaten orders and approached him. They asked him to bring them to Hotel Gatchalian in Barangay Catmon, Malolos, Bulacan, despite the presence of another tricycle cab ahead of Ka Pedy at the terminal queue.
Hacienda Luisita Union Leader Killed in Central Luzon

Last Nov. 6, 2004, 5,000 farm workers belonging to the United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) and Central Azucarera de Tarlac Labor Union (CATLU) staged a strike against the management of the 5,000-hectare hacienda in Tarlac owned by the family of former President Corazon Aquino. On November 16, 2004 seven people were killed when police and military violently dispersed the striking workers at the hacienda. PNP and AFP personnel were called in to break up the strike and they hosed down strikers with water cannon, lobbed teargas and when these did not work, the military and police opened fire at them.

After attending the All-Leaders Meeting of workers at around 6:00 PM, today, September 22, 2005, Diosdado �Ding� or �Fort� Fortuna passed by the picketline of striking workers at the Neste factory in Cabuyao, Laguna to talk with some students who were there on an exposure and share with them the union�s experience for the past three (3) years of struggle. After that visit, Fort went home on board his motorcycle.

An acquaintance of Armando Barquillo nicknamed "Kelly" visited the victim�s house in Tansa, Cavite, looking for his whereabouts. Since the victim was not in the vicinity at that time, "Kelly" talked to Barquillo�s father-in-law and got Barquillo�s cell phone number from him.

Around 6:00pm last June 16, 2005, while inside their house, Rommel heard some men calling him to go out of his house. And so he went down from his house and talk to them. They were talking near the comfort room. a few kilometers from the house when he was hacked by the perpetrators. He called out for help, crying out his mother�s name. His mother who was inside the house and was about to sleep heard his son; she immediately got the lamp and went out to look for her son. William Tadena, a priest from the Philippine Independent Church had just finished officiating mass at the PIC in Barangay Guevara, Lapaz, Tarlac City and was just leaving the church driving an owner-type jeep when two unidentified suspects riding a motorcycle with no plate number started shooting at them.

Between 8:00 PM � 9:00 PM on Christmas Eve, 1st Councilor Francisco Gatdula just came from his house and was walking towards the church for the Christmas Eve mass when he chanced upon a single motorcycle traveling the opposite direction. It had three riders who started shooting at him. After making sure that he was dead, the gunmen immediately fled from the crime scene.
