Gorean Weapons |
bola: described as three straps of long leather ending with a small leather sack containing a heavy, rounded weight; suchis used in hunting and also in game/sport.
Slowly, singing in a gutteral chant, a Tuchuk warrior song, he began to swing the bole. It consists of three long straps of I leather, each about five feet long, each terminating in a leather sack which contains, sewn inside, a heavy, round, metal weight. It was probably developed for hunting the tumit, a huge, flightless carnivorous bird of the plains, but the Wagon Peoples use it also, and well, as a weapon of war.
{Nomads of Gor, ch 2}
crossbow: called the weapon of the Assassin, it is considered more accurate at short distances. Described as having heavy cable and leaves of steel it can be loaded and kept loaded like a firearm.
great axe: described as a great, curved, single bladed axe of hardened iron with a blunt hammer-like head.
harpoon, light: used by Red Hunters to hunt and kill sea sleen, often from a kayak.
hunting arrow: an arrow with a long tapering point fastened firmly to the shaft to assist in easy removal from prey.
kailla lance: this weapon is used for hunting kailiauk and mounted warfare.
kailla lance, hunting: the hunting lance is commonly longer, heavier and thicker than the war lance; they are usually undecorated or adorned only with a knot or tuft of feathers; the point of a hunting lance is typically longer and narrower than the war lance, designed to pierce deeply enough to strike a kailiauk's heart; the shaft is shaped temwood; the tip is either metal, carved bone or shaped stone, lashed to the shaft with boiled sinew or rawhide, or attached with metal trade rivets; leather grips, hand loops, and decorations are often present also.
kailla lance, war: this weapon is used for hunting kailiauk and mounted warfare; a long slender spear, eight to ten feet long, designed to be used from the saddle of a rider on kaillaback; usually carried in the right fist, easily, and are flexible and light; eavily decorated; made from temwood.
lance:
The lances of the Wagon Peoples are not pouched. They are carried in the right fist, easily, and are flexible and light, used for thrusting, not the battering-ram effect of the heavy lances of Europe's High Middle Ages. Needless to say, they can be almost as swift and delicate in their address as a saber. The lances are black, cut from the poles of young tem trees. They may be bent almost double, like finely tempered steel, before they break. A loose loop of boskhide, wound twice about the right fist, helps to retain the weapon in hand-to-hand combat. It is seldom thrown.
{Nomads of Gor, ch 2}
ostraka: a round ball used as a weapon; missiles (Magicians of Gor)
quiva: a balanced saddle knife about a foot in length double edged; it tapers to a daggerlike point. It is regarded as more of a missile weapon than a hand knife.
shield: made from the hide of the kailiauk, from the thick hide of the back of the neck; it is a belief of the Red Savages that if they are unworthy, or do not speak the truth, that their shield will not protect them.
sleen knife: this is a broad bladed, flat, double edged utility knife equipped with a simple stubby crossguard and unadorned pommel. Much favored by hunters and woodsmen, it is equally suited for use as a camping and skinning knife, prying tool,and as a weapon in hand to hand combat.
small bow: can be fired and drawn rapidly.No Gorean weapon can match it in its rate of fire; it can be swept from one side to side of the kaiila to the other; it is not unusual for a warrior to shield himself behind the body of his racing kaiila and circling the enemy, rise up suddenly to fire over the animals back or from beneath it's neck; a heel over the animals back and a fist in it's silken neck hair, or an arm thrust through a leather throat hoop, provide the leverage needed for these feats.
spear: similar in most respects to the common Gorean spear, though often it is found tipped with carved bone or shaped stone, rather than metal. It is also highly carved and decorated, according to tribal custom.
tarn goad:
tarn knife: this is a short bladed, single edged utility knife typically used by tarnsmen and generally included among their saddle equipment; some versions of such knives are designed so that the blade folds into the handle for safety when not in use.
tarn lance: similar in most respects to the war lance, except that it is longer and more slender, to facilitate easier use from tarnback.
tomahawk: this weapon consists of a long wooden handle up to two feet in length, with a stone blade attached; often carved with ceremonial inscriptions.
turf knife: wooden-bladed, saw-edged, paddle-like tool, used by Red Savages to cut and saw sod.
war arrow: the head of this arrow has an angled, wider base that is not as securely connected to the shaft; if the shaft is pulled to attempt removal, the head is more likely to break off and remain in the wound.
war club: a carved, shaped club of wood or bone, often mounted with a stone or metal head of some sort; this weapon is approximately two to three feet in length.
ulo: a woman's knife of the Red Hunters. It has semicircular blade in a wooden handle which is not suitable for carving, but good for cutting meat and sinew.
