"Gor," he said, "is the name of this world. In all the languages of this planet, the word means Home Stone." He paused, noting my lack of comprehension. "Home Stone," he repeated. "Simply that." {Tarnsman of Gor}

All information pertaining to Gor is found from the Books of John Norman and the Gorean Series and as such are credited to John Norman.

It is a complex, vital, bright, colorful, deeply sensuous civilization; it is a harsh, gorgeous world in which the slave girl has a special role and place; her condition is unquestioned and categorical; it is supported by history, by custom and law.. {Rogue of Gor}

Gor is a planet, a counter earth so it is called, that is always on the other side of the sun from earth so that it is never discovered.  Gor, much like earth, holds living, breathing animals, humans, and beasts unheard of.  On Gor there are many cities, in many different climates: arctic, desert, sea, mountains, etc..  Most cities are governed by an executive, the Administrator, in conjunction with the high council.  Some cities are governed by a Ubar, who is in effect a military sovereign, sometimes a tyrant, whose word is law (note that Ubars are normally only in effect during warm times).  Gor has high castes (Physicians, Warriors, Builders, Initiates, and Scribes) who have a higher knowledge than the more ignorant caste of peasants and those below them.  Surprisingly, despite this information, the more populace of the Goreans are the peasants.  Yes, on Gor there is a deep social structure of Master and slave, yet perhaps again surprisingly, most women are not slaves.  There are Free Women in both the high castes and in the peasants.  Peasants are the most populated on the planet and make a very big part of the society.  Free Women though, much like earthen medeivel times, are subject to the whims of men, marrying for political reasons or for financial gain.  'Man' is not the highest on this world though, above them are the Priest Kings who are a race of insectoids.  The Priest Kings keep watch on the men and women of Gor and make sure that earthen devices like guns and more destruction causing weapons are not formed.

There is more to learn, including the following which is a brief overview of some Gorean basics and regular terms one may come across.  This is not complete in the least, it is just a brief set of information meant to help those new to gor or unfamiliar with common gorean terminology, and to help those of us who know it to just brush up a bit.  More detailed information can be found within this site in such pages as Gorean Measurements, Gorean Medical Terms and many others.  Though we don't live on Gor, sometimes understanding the culture of a society leads to a better understanding of its customs and rituals so in a sense, all need be learned and adapted to our situation.

kajir to kajir greetings nick/slave/girl/boy/sister/brother
Hail

Farewells:

'Be Well' Such a simple little phrase.. two words.. an easy way to say goodbye, but for kajir, they must forever watch their tongue. A kajir should not say 'be well,' the proper way is 'wish You well Master/Mistress + [Nick],' for if a kajir says 'be well,' and if a FP wishes to be demanding, it can be construed that a slave saying 'be well' is like a command. A slave never imparts instructions upon a FP nor tells a FP what to do.
'One of the first lessons I was taught on Gor was that concern for a slave was out of place... I did learn... that slaves were not permitted to impart instruction to a free man, since it would place Him in their debt, and nothing was owed a slave/I> (Tarnsman of Gor, Ch 3, ¶ 57)

Other Info:

Gor has three moons
Gor has less gravity than that of earth, allowing for greater physical feets of Men; "[Gor] was smaller than our earth" (Tarnsman of Gor, Ch 2, ¶ 6)

Gorean Proverb:
'Scavengers come to feast on the bodies of the wounded tarnsman' (Tarnsman of Gor, Chapter 9, Paragraph 44)

Sitting/Kneeling/Significance of Chairs:
On Gor, incidentally, chairs have special significance, and do not often occur in private dwellings. They tend to be reserved for significant personages, such as administrators and judges. Moreover, although you may find this hard to understand, they are not thought to be comfortable. Indeed, when I had returned to Earth from my first trip to Gor I had found that one of the minor inconveniences of my return was reaccustoming myself to the simple business of sitting on chairs. I felt, for some months, rather awkward, rather unsteady perched on a little wooden platform supported by four narrow sticks. Perhaps if you can imagine yourself suddenly being forced to sit on rather high end tables you can sense the feeling.
The Gorean male, at ease, usually sits cross-legged and the female kneels, resting back on her heels. The position of the Tower Slave, in which Vika knelt, differs from that of a free woman only in the position of the wrists which are held before her and, when not occupied, crossed as though for binding. A free woman's wrists are never so placed. {Priest-Kings of Gor, Chapter 6}

Slave Ring and Free Women:
This harsh treatment, incidentally, when she is thought to deserve it, may even be inflicted on a Free Companion, in spite of the fact that she is free and usually much loved. According to the Gorean way of looking at things a taste of the slave ring is thought to be occasionally beneficial to all women, even the exalted Free Companions.
Thus when she has been irritable or otherwise troublesome even a Free Companion may find herself at the foot of the couch looking forward to a pleasant night on the stones, stripped, with neither mat nor blanket, chained to a slave ring precisely as though she were a lowly slave girl.
It is the Gorean way of reminding her, should she need to be reminded, that she, too, is a woman, and thus to be dominated, to be subject to men. Should she be tempted to forget this basic fact of Gorean life the slave ring set in the bottom of each Gorean couch is there to refresh her memory. Gor is a man's world.' {Priest-Kings of Gor, Chapter 9}

Goreans are Suspicious of Strangers:
The Gorean is suspicious of the stranger, particularly in the vicinity of his native walls. Indeed, in Gorean the same word is used for both stranger and enemy. {Outlaw of Gor}
