Ellis' Resume of the Wisdom Family

Page 4
Nancemond River adjacent to Col. Thomas Dew & George Spyvey. On same date & page, 300 acres of land for transport of 10 persons: Xpr. Hoare, Mary Neale, Robert Pomprett, Francis Lane (?Land), John Hart, William Edson, Thomas Eldridge, John Jenkins, John Jenkinson, & Martha Wisdom.

NOTE: The wife or wives of Thomas(1) Wisdom are unknown. However the first Martha Wisdom who arrived in VA in year 1662 seems to be the best prospect due to the fact that both parties arrived in the same time frame. The second Martha Wisdom who arrived in VA in 1672 is equally applicable in view of the later birth of Thomas (1) Wisdom's son, Francis (1) Wisdom (c 1676-1751). The researcher should keep in mind that the VA Land Grant Records (Nugent) are not an accurate source of information regarding the names of transportees after the 1660's. (It is noted that the old land clerks of that era were prone to use the same person's name over & over again. It is possible that the above two Martha Wisdom's could be one and the same person?).

Allied Families: (?Miller), White, Collins, Quinn, Griffin, Bell, Perry, Burriss, Rich, Mannen, Bradley, Stapp, Stone, Rucker, Sutton, Gardner, Hardin, Burton, Gholson, Ham & etc.

FIRST GENERATION:

1. The immigrant, Thomas (1) Wisdom, b: c 1630, d: c 1696, arrived in the Virginia Colony before year 1665. Thomas (1) was granted 127 acres of land in Petsoe Parish, Glouster Co., Va on 10 April 1667 where he lived until his death prior to 29 Oct 1696 (Miller Deed). The wife of Thomas (1) is unknown. However, it seems that she was either the Matha Wisdom transported by John Blake in 1662 or the Martha Wisdom transported by James Collins in 1672 (both may be the same person due to repeated use of names by land clerks?). It seems that this couple had a least one son, Francis (1) Wisdom b: c 1676, d: c 1750 in Orange County, VA. (There may be other children.).

SECOND GENERATION

NOTE: The Counties of Glouster, King & Queen and Caroline have had their records destroyed by wars & fires. Thereby making research a problem, at best. It is hoped that other data will be found supporting the idea that the following Francis (1) Wisdom was the son of the immigrant, Thomas (1) Wisdom of Glouster. Available records follow:

a.) The book 'Records of Glouster Co., VA' by Polly Cary Mason, page 81: Quote "Thomas Wisdom, on North side of Thomas Deacons Mill Swamp & adjoining Thomas Miller and Thomas Vickers. HR. John Reese, Judith Knight, Mary Godfrey. Glouster County, Book 6, page 72, dated 10 April 1667, 127 acres of land. Rent Rolls: 1705/05 Petso Parish 150 acres".

b.) 'Virginia Historical Magazine', Vol. 32, page 238: Virginia Quit Rents 1704 "Francis Wisdom 150 acres" (Glouster).
