RESUME by J. D. Ellis of Cobb Is. MD

(deceased by May 1985)

Introduction

Featuring the John (1) Wisdom of Orange County, Virginia

Notice: The vintage 1910 Wisdom Family Book, by George W. Wisdom was not referred to in this Resume because the said book fails to match extant county records in early colonial eras and is downright misleading in years prior to 1800.

Currently, my wife, Faye's earliest known Wisdom ancestor is the John wisdom (c. 1698- 1762), whose will was probated 26 Aug. 1762 in Orange Co., VA; leaving his large Estate to his widow, Ann Collins Wisdom (c. 1718-1799) for the duration of her widowhood or lifetime. (This ancestor, hereinafter, referred to as John (1) Wisdom.)

John (1) Wisdom came to Orange Co., Va in year 1733, either from England or from King & Queen Co., Va. Circumstantial evidence suggests that John (1) along with a William & two Francis Wisdoms, and a Nancy Ann (Nan) Wisdom White were close kin. (Probably, issue of the elder Francis Wisdom of the group, who had lived in both King & Queen, and Glouster Counties; and of most significance, that the elder Francis Wisdom, may have been one of the sons of the immigrant, Thomas Wisdom, who first settled in Petsoe parish, Glouster co., FA in or before year 1665). This ancestor, hereinafter, referred to as Thomas (1) Wisdom. Refer to Vol I & II of 'Cavalieers & Pioneers' by Nugent.

The circumstantial evidence is hereby presented in the Introduction of this Resume for the benefit of other Wisdom Family researchers. The reader should bear in mind that the evidence is unproven & highly speculative, with regard to the two generations back of John (1) Wisdom. The evidence follows under the heading of 'The Wisdoms & Allied Families of Early Colonial Virginia'.

The Wisdoms & Allied Families of Early Colonial Virginia

The land lying on the South side of a swamp, dividing the lands of Issak Richardson & John Day near Rappahannock Road, to Mr. Richard Barnard, Thomas Vickers & a branch dividing this land from the land of Thomas Wisdom.
