The island is the home of reggae music and offers an array of talent and studio facilities for stage shows and live entertainment. We also have information on requirements, production services in Jamaica and some tips to remember when travelling to Jamaica.

Over several years Jamaica has developed a comprehensive network of support services and skills to meet the needs of the international film industry. The country with its amazing physical diversity, is a low-cost filming location for movie makers in search of a varied tropical setting. There are also several local production houses working independently or in joint ventures to produce high quality programmes for the international markets. In addition, Jamaica boasts one of the most efficient and effective Film and Music Commission office outside of Hollywood.

The Jamaican film industry offers two distinct areas with great investment potential:

  • film export, video, photography and music investments, (either independently or as a joint venture), with overseas distribution/marketing.
  • provision of local support services to facilitate foreign and local productions. Greatest demand areas include:
    • sound stages
    • mobile film production units
    • make up and wardrobe supplies
    • underwater services and equipment
    • set design and construction services
    • editing and post production facilities
    • props suppliers, (e.g., marine and land craft)
    • marketing and distribution
    • processing laboratory

The Jamaican government provides attractive incentives to encourage the development of the film industry. For example:

  • Profits from overseas release of film and video are tax free for nine years when the production company is incorporated in Jamaica.
  • Equipment, machinery and material for building studios and support facilities are duty and tax free.
  • Dividends paid to resident shareholders with investments in film companies are tax free, and not subject to withholding tax; non-resident shareholders earn dividends taxed according to the provisions of the Double Taxation Treaty with their country. The USA and UK are treaty members. Other members include; Canada, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Norway, Denmark.
