The Arawak
Indians gave our island its name. Xaymaca. And for a while, they had it all to themselves.
But along the way, over the centuries, the whole world came...and stayed. And they made us
what we are. They came out of Spain and gave us names like Ocho Rios and Rio Grande. And
out of England we got law and language.
The Africans brought with them rich culture and vitality.
Out of Portugal, with ancient Jewish traditions. Out of China and India, Syria and Nepal,
Scotland and France. And they all had sons and daughters...Jamaicans.
So while our National dish is
Ackee from Ghana, served with salt-fish from anywhere, our menus include fried wanton,
fettuccini, boeuf fondue and Cerasee tea. Now, perhaps you can see why our motto is: Out of
Many One People. And why our international origins have become out national pride and joy.
