Jamaican MapJamaica is an island of 4,234 sq. miles, 146 miles long, located at 18 degrees north latitude, just south of Cuba.

It has a scenic and varied topography, with undulating hills rising to 7,402 feet at Blue Mountain Peak in the east, numerous rivers, water falls and picturesque beaches.

MountainsIt has a warm maritime tropical climate with small seasonal variations, regular winds, ample rainfall and many sunny days. Jamaica is a member of the British Commonwealth. The system of government is based on the Westminster model, with two houses of parliament, an appointed Governor General representing the Queen as head of state, and an elected Prime Minister as head of government.

The Prime Minister is the leader of the political party which wins the majority of seats in the 60 member elected House of Jamaica House - Official Residence Of The Prime MinisterRepresentatives. Together with a Senate of 21 appointed members, it comprises the legislature or parliament.

The Prime Minister presides over a Cabinet of Ministers which exercises day to day government policy direction, and whose members are selected mainly from the membership of the House of Representatives, with several from the appointed Senate. Jamaica’s legal system is based on the English system of law, with an independent judiciary. There are several levels of court hearings, from Magistrate Courts, the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and a final appeal to the Privy Council in the UK.

New Kingston - Jamaica's Business DistrictThe population of Jamaica in 1994 was 2.5 million, with a growth rate of 1.1 % annually. Kingston, the capital, major port and commercial center, has a population approaching 1 million in its metropolitan area.

Other major towns are Montego Bay, a tourist center and port in the north west; Mandeville, a bauxite mining center in mid-island; and May Pen, an agricultural center in the southern plains.
