Tools and their Various Upgrades
Ocarina
Well, it's obviously important since it's in the name of the game. This instrument allows Link to do all sorts of crazy things, from warping across Hylia to calling the rain. See Ocarina Songs for the full scoop on each one. This tool has one upgrade, from a Fairy Ocarina to the Ocarina of Time. You get the latter after you have completed all three child temples (see coming of age)

Tunic
The Green Tunic doesn't really do much besides clothe Link. Which, granted, is probably quite important. Link starts out the game wearing it. But the GoronTunic is even cooler -- it allows Link to withstand serious heat for as long as you need. Check out this baby in the Fire Temple and you can win it in Goron City. You can buy this tunic in the Goron Shop or get it from Darunia's kid who is named after you. Only adult Link can wear it. The Zora Tunic is also nifty: it allows Link to breathe under water. It is really useful only when wearing the Iron Boots as well. These can be bought in the Zora Shop or gained from the Zora King after you unfreeze him. Only adult Link can wear it.

Boots
The Kokiri Boots are also pretty useless, besides magically growing to fit Link's size :) But seriously, they are just normal shoes. Link starts off the game wearing them. The Iron Boots are quite heavy and are useful for preventing Link from rising to the surface of water or losing his balance in a strong wind. They can be found in the Ice Cavern. Only adult Link can wear them. The Hover Boots allow Link to, well, hover, in midair for a brief bit of time. They basically make everything frictionless on a normal floor, which is generally not a good thing. They are found in the Shadow Temple. Only adult Link can wear them.

Scale
Link starts off with a pretty minor scale, only allowing him to dive for about three seconds underwater. The Silver Scale can be won in the Zora diving game; it increases your breath-holding capacity. The Golden Scale is your prize for catching a huge fish (as an adult) at the fishing place on Lake Hylia. With this scale, you can hold your breath for twelve seconds and touch the bottom of the tank in the Lakeside Laboratory!

Macho Link
Link starts off pretty weak, unable to even lift small shrubbery (okay, all together now: Ni!). You can get the Goron Bracelet from Darunia after you talk to him for the first time. With them, you can pick up bomb-flowers, etc. You pick up the Silver Gauntlets as a kid after finishing the first half of the Spirit Temple, then can wear them as soon as you warp forward in time. You can lift certain types of boulders with these. They are for adult Link only; sorry. The Golden Gauntlets are uber-powerful, allowing Link to lift unbelievably huge objects. You can pick these up in Ganon's Castle. They are also only for adult Link.

Lens of Truth
This cool tool is found in the Well of Kakariko Village as a child (you have to revisit the past just before entering the Shadow Temple). It allows Link to see invisible objects, from enemies to hookshot targets to non-solid walls. Unfortunately, it uses up magic whenever it's in use. Both adult and child Link can use it.

Magic Beans
These are pretty cool; you can buy them (primarily from the guy camped out by the Zora River) as child Link for about ten rupees and plant them in soft soil. When you return as adult Link, you can hop on the fully-grown plant for a fun ride -- usually to serious cash or a Piece of Heart!

Farore's Wind
This spell can be cast by child or adult Link. When it is cast (and yes, it does use up magic) it designates a warping point to which you can transport whenever you cast it again. Link can find it in the Great Fairy Fountain at Zora's Fountain.

Nayru's Love
This is another spell that can be cast by child or adult Link. It initiates a magical barrier -- yep, by using up your magic power -- to protect you from most enemies. Link can find it in the Great Fairy Fountain at Desert Colossus.

Bottles
Four glass bottles are scattered about Hyrule. In them you can contain fairies (which revive you when you die and replenish your hearts when you're alive), milk (which gives you five hearts for each sip), blue fire (which can be found in the Ice Cavern), fish, Poes, and potion (the red gives life, green gives magic, and blue gives both; all can be found in Kakariko Town as an adult and the first two can be bought at Hyrule Castle Town as an adult). Here are the locations of the bottles:
- Win Talon's Special Cucoo Game (first door on the left in
Lon Lon Ranch)
- Find the six cucoos scattered around
Kakariko Village and return them to their pin. You can find details on this in the trading sequences section at the bottom of this page.
- Near the mostly-submerged columns close to the shore at
Lake Hylia, you will find a bottle containing a message from Princess Ruto. You are mostly looking, at that point, for her letter, but you can keep the bottle after you're done with all that mess.
- Shoot and capture all ten Poes of Hyrule Field in bottles and turn them in to the freaky guy who lives in the gatehouse of Hyrule Castle Town. Once you have done this with all ten Poes, you'll get the final bottle. This one's a pain in the butt, but the prize is worth it. See the bottom of the page for the locations of all Big Poes.

Stone of Agony
This is one of the prizes for ridding Hyrule of Golden Skulltula. You can get it after 20 kills. If you have a Rumble Pack (and you can buy a generic brand one for much less than the Nintendo one), the Stone of Agony will rumble your controller when you are standing near some kind of secret, usually a grotto of some sort. See Golden Skulltula Locations.

Zelda's Letter
You'll get this letter pretty early on in the game after your first chat with Princess Zelda. It allows you up Death Mountain, but beyond that . . . well, it's just extra weight, I guess.

Gerudo Membership Card
You'll have to go through heck and beyond to get this stupid thing. It's quite useful, though, as it allows you to walk among the Gerudo comfortably, play their Horseback Archery game (which is really fun), and enter the Gerudo Training Center for a nice prize (and a small fee, of course). You'll get this as an adult after you free all four carpenters from the Gerudos.

Wallet
Link begins with the child wallet which only holds 99 rupees. If you want to buy certain items that cost more than that, though, you need the adult wallet, which holds up too 200 rupees. This is the prize for killing at least 10 Golden Skulltula. Adult or child Link can use this item. The giant's wallet fills up at 500 rupees, so that's really the way to go. You can pick this up from the Skulltula house after you've destroyed at least 30 Golden Skulltula.

Weapons and their Various Upgrades

Deku Stick

These can be picked up all over
Kokiri Forest, but namely by the Deku Baba that stand straight up when you approach. They can be used as swords, but break after one swipe. They are mostly useful for lighting torches. If you keep them burning too long, they will burn away; to save them, pull out some other weapon just before the stick turns to a crisp. Both child and adult Link can use these.

Deku Nut

Possibly the most worthless item in the game, I can't even fathom why they created Deku Nuts. I feel bad even capitalizing it. They can be used in the fight against
Queen Gohma . . . I guess. Well, they do stun many puny enemies with their blinding flash of light. But if you are even minutely comfortable with your sword, you really don't need to ever mess with these stupid things. Both child and adult Link can use these. Though I don't know why he would want to.

Fairy Slingshot

This cool weapon is found in the
Deku Tree. For useful tips, go here: Operation Strategies. It basically acts as a mini-bow and can only be used by child Link. To upgrade your bag, head to the Lost Woods. Turn right and go to the edge and shoot round object hanging from tree three times in center to get a perfect score of 300 and a bag that holds 40 Deku Seeds.

Boomerang

The Boomerang is found in
Jabu-Jabu's Belly. It can be used to stun and kill enemies, retrieve items, and trigger switches. It takes some practice, so see the Operation Strategies for some tips. Unfortunately, as soon as you get this cool item, you have to become an adult; the Boomerang can only be used by child Link.

Bomb

This cool weapon is used quite often in the game. It behaves exactly like a bomb flower, only you can pull it out at any time. Your first
bomb bag can be found in Dodongo's Cavern. Use this weapon to destroy enemies, blow down doors and walls, and trip various switches. Don't hold it over your head too long, though, because it doesn't care where it is when it detonates. When it starts flashing rapidly, you can take this as a hint that it will explode soon thereafter. It can be thrown by walking and releasing it or placed by standing still and releasing it. This weapon can be used by both child and adult Link.

Bombchu

Bombchu can be first retrieved in the Bombchu Bowling Alley of Hyrule Castle Town or in the child half of the Spirit Temple. It's basically a mouse-like Bomb on wheels (and I'm dead sure they're making fun of Pokemon with this one). It climbs walls, enemies, whatever and detonates in places impossible for normal bombs to reach. And they're just so much cooler. However, they are difficult to control once you've let them loose; it will take some practice to become a pro, especially when the surface the bombachu is going over is quite bumpy. Both child and adult Link can use this.

Fairy Bow and Arrows

The
Fairy Bow is found in the Forest Temple and can only be used by adult Link. It behaves much like the Fairy Slingshot, but see this page for techniques: Operating Strategies. Link's initial quiver holds 30 arrows. A 50-arrow quiver can be won with a score of 1,500 at the Gerudo Horseback Archery range. There are four different kinds of arrows in the game, each performing a different task:
-
Wooden Arrows come automatically with the bow. They do not use up magic power and are a simple and effective weapon for most enemies.
-
Fire Arrows are useful for destroying icy enemies, lighting torches, and melting ice. They use up magic each time you use them. If you stand by the tree on the island in the middle of Lake Hylia after completing the Water Temple, you can shoot the rising sun with a normal Wooden Arrow, causing the Fire Arrows to fall from the sky onto a platform not far away. Swim across to get your prize.
-
Ice Arrows are your prize for completing the Gerudo Training Center. They are used for freezing enemies and putting out fires. If Link freezes an enemy then hits it with his Megaton Hammer, a vial of magic will likely be produced. These arrows use up magic power when used.
-
Light Arrows are given to Link after he defeats all seven adult temples and speaks with Shiek in the Temple of Time. They can be used to stun enemies and are absolutely vital in the final battle with Ganondorf. They use up  magic each time they are used (even more magic than the Fire and Ice Arrows).

Hookshot

The
Hookshot is my personal favorite item in the game, though only adult Link can use it. It is the equivalent of the child Boomerang, but is even cooler. It grapples objects, pulls you towards them, pulls them to you, stuns huge enemies, kills smaller ones, and can even be used in the final fight against Ganondorf. The Hookshot will be upgraded to the Longshot after you defeat Dark Link in the Water Temple (and that's a prize well deserved). The two are essentially the same, but the Longshot has a much longer reach. It's just an infinately useful weapon and tool. See this page for Operating Strategies.

Megaton Hammer

This guys rocks. It is a huge two-hammer that can flip even rusty switch and desemate nearly all enemies. It can be used like a sword, though it has the disadvantages of less control and inability to use a shield simultaneously. It's found in the
Fire Temple and can only be used by adult Link (considering it's about the size of child Link).

Din's Fire

This spell uses up magic when cast, but sends this crazy wall of fire out around Link to protect him from enemies or light a large number of torches at once (hint hint, Shadow Temple). It can be used by child and adult Link. Link can find this spell at the Great Fairy Fountain at Hyrule Castle as a child.

Shield

The
Deku Shield is quite puny, but it serves its purpose. It can be bought for 40 rupees at the shop in Kokiri Forest and can only be used by child Link. Watch out for fire enemies - this shield is wooden! The Hylian Shield can be used by child or adult Link, but there are differences in its operation. It can be bought for a discount (after you talk to the guard at the gate to Death Mountain Trail) in Hyrule Castle Town when Link is a child. Child Link can find a free Hylian Shield as a child by entering the Kokiri Graveyard at night and opening the second grave to the left on the front row and hopping in the revealed hole. The Mirror Shield is your prize for completing the second half of the Spirit Temple. It's an amazing piece of work that reflect all kinds of light and attacks. For operating tips on all three shields, see this page: Operating Strategies.

Sword

This is, of course, the most used weapon in the game. Link without his sword is truly a fish out of water. Swords, other than killing enemies, can be used to detect hollow recesses behind walls, cut down various objects, block certain attacks, trigger switches, you name it. Go to this page for more extensive techniques:
Operating Strategies. Four swords are present in the game:
- The
Kokiri Sword is found in Kokiri Forest and has a tiny reach (but it's long enough for child Link). It cannot be used by adult Link.
- The
Master Sword is retrieved in the Temple of Time after Link has completed all three child temples. Its reach is much longer and is twice as powerful as the Kokiri Sword. It can be used only by adult Link.
- Don't buy this thing, people. It's not worth wasting your money. The
Giant's Knife can be bought by Biggorn (you have to bomb a series of doors in Goron City to get to his forge) for 200 rupees. It packs serious punch and is freaking humongous, but it only has 100 swipes on it. And this doesn't mean you can hit an enemy 100 times before the weapon breaks; it means you can only swipe it (including at the air) 100 times. You'll be  surprised by how much you take your sword for granted if you buy this thing and it breaks while you're in a fight with a Wolfos and you have only hit two enemies with it prior to this (which is exactly what happened to me). It can be used only by adult Link.
- The Biggoron Sword is basically the Giant's Knife but with an unlimited number of hits. It is twice as powerful as the Master Sword, but is a two-handed blade and so you cannot use any kind of shield while this guy is out.  It's wonderful for defeating most bosses and enemies. Though you have to go through a long and involved trading sequence for it (see below), it is well worth your time. It can be used by only adult Link.

Trading Sequences

Happy Masks

The Happy Mask shop is located near the Temple of Time in Hyrule Castle Town when Link is a child. This trading sequence doesn't really serve too much of a purpose, but it's fun. It can only be done as a child, since adult Link can't wear any masks.
- The
Keaton Mask is the first one you can borrow. Show it to the guard at the gate of Death Mountain Trail in Kakariko Village and you'll get a 5 rupee profit. He says it's for his son, but you always see him wearing it.
- Head back to the shop to borrow the
Skull Mask. Take this one to the Lost Woods. Take the first left, hop onto the short stump and talk to the Skull Kid. You'll lose 5 rupees in this deal.
- The
Spooky Mask goes to the kid who runs around the Kakariko Graveyard during the day. He'll give you the exact price of the mask.
- The
Bunny Hood is the most difficult to get rid of. Chase down the running man who is always dashing around Hyrule Field's trails. When he stops to rest, you can talk to him. He will fill up your wallet to the brim, so spend all your money and have the giant's wallet to get the best deal.
- After you have gone through this trading sequence, you can borrow the masks you've already sold, the
Mask of Truth (wear it in front of people to read theirm nids and those time-telling stones to get neat game tips), the Goron Mask, the Gerudo Mask, and the Zora Mask (all will evoke strange reactions to people). You can only borrow one of these at a time.

Biggoron Sword

This is the longest and most worthwhile trading sequence of the game. The reward for finishing this crazy quest is more than sufficient. YOU CANNOT WARP WHILE YOU ARE CARRYING ANYTHING WITH A TIMER ON IT!!!
- As an adult, go to Kakariko Village and talk to the Cucoo lady over by the Graveyard. She'll give you a
pocket egg to take care of. Let it hatch (make it the next day by letting time pass wherever or playing the Sun's Song) and go wake up Talon. You can find him in the house in front of the Well. Return the pocket egg to the lady and she'll give you an odd, blue cucoo named Cojiro.
- Head to the Lost Woods and take the first left. You'll find a scrawny-looking guy leaning against the stump. Give the bird to him and he'll give you an
Odd Mushroom.
- Run to Kakariko Village, head up the first flight of stairs towards Death Mountain, go in the apothocary and out the back door. Once outside, go in the door to the south. Inside, give the mushroom to the lady behind the counter. Now you can make connections: this lady is the man and the cucoo lady's mother and the wife of that annoying construction guy from your childhood years. She will give you an
Odd Potion.
- Take the medicine and race back to the skinny guy; you'll find a Kokiri girl in his place. She informs you that he is dead or turned into a Stalfoe or something. She demands the Odd Potion and gives you the
Poacher's Saw in return.
- Take this saw to the head carpenter by the Gerudos. He will give you a broken
Goron's Sword, apologizing that he can't give you anything better in return.
- Take this to Biggoron up by Death Mountain (by that wall you can climb to enter the crater). He'll be complaining about how the recent exposions have hurt his eyes. So off you go to get a
Perscription for some eye drops.
- Go to the Zora King (he has to be unfrozen -- you need blue fire from the Ice Cavern) and show him the perscription. He will give you an
Eyeball Frog.
- The frog only allows you a miniscule amount of time to get to the Lake Hylia Laboratory, so ride Epona as far as you can (you can jump over the fences into Lake Hylia area). After you convince the poor scientist that the frog is not his dinner but part of a prescription, he'll grudgingly give you the
Eyedrops to take to Biggoron.
- Once again, you have very little time to get to Biggoron, so take Epona all the way to Kakariko. Race up Death Mountain Trail and give Biggoron the medication. He'll be revitalized and get to work right away on the broken sword. He'll give you a
claim check and tell you to come back in three days.
- Unless you have something better to do to waste three days, just play the Sun's Song six times. Return the claim check to get . . . tada! your
Biggoron Sword. Go here for tips on operation: Operation Strategies.

Second Bottle - finding the cucoos

Here are the locations of the six cucoos in Kakariko Village you need to find to get the second bottle:
- One has not wandered far from the pen.
- Check out the wooden crate in front of the house just in front of the Well.
- Don't stumble over the one by the entrance to the village from Hyrule Field.
- Take one of the cucoos you've already found and, still holding him above your head, climb onto the halfway completed structure by the Well and jump off the side to the ledge by the door to the Skulltula House.
- You need another cucoo you've already found for this one: Go up the stairs to the windmill house and jump off the ledge towards the building just north of you. Throw that cucoo back over the fence towards the pen. Go down to the ground and grab the cucoo on the ground (don't go inside any doors or hop in that grotto until that bottle is in your hand - it will reset everything) and throw him with the other cucoo you used to fly here.
- Now go back down to ground level and climb the ladder to the ledge behind the windmill. You'll find the sixth and final cucoo here. Collect the other two you've tossed on the ground over by the Well.

Fourth Bottle - the Big Poes
These ten Big Poes, once captured in bottles and taken to the Ghost collector just inside the Hyrule Castle Town gate, will win Link the fourth bottle. Link must be riding on Epona for the ghosts to appear. Take them down with two arrows apiece.
- sign near the entrance to Hyrule Castle
- the tree near the entrance of Lon Lon Ranch
- wall east of Lon Lon Ranch
- bushes west of Hyrule Castle
- overhanging near Kakariko Village and Zora River
- gray rock by the fence southeast of Lon Lon Ranch
- tree north of Gerudo Valley entrance
- passageway near Gerudo Valley entrance
- lone tree east of the Lake Hylia entrance
- rock southeast of the lone tree east of the Lake Hylia entrance
