| Death Mountain Trail There's not much to it -- just walk up the path. Watch out for the nasty baddies and the rolling Goron. When you reach a wide point in the trail that has a red flag on a tall pole, hang a right. Go straight past the circle of rocks into Goron City. Goron City On each level (four being the top level where you just entered), here is stuff to do: 1. Shop, Darunia's room, spinning pot (light all the torches downstairs to make it spin, then throw a bomb in) 2. Shortcut to the Lost Woods 3. Biggoron's forge, rolling Goron 4. Rupees (you can get to them if you have bombs or the Megaton Hammer), old location of the Spiritual Stone of Fire. Head to the bottom level and play Zelda's Lullaby on the mat in front of Darunia's closed door. The doors to that room and the shop will open; enter to speak with the boss of the Gorons. He will be pretty ticked off until you play Saria's Song for him. From that point on, he'll be kind enough to offer you the Spiritual Stone -- so long as you do his dirty work in Dodongo's Cavern for him. He'll even throw in some pretty jewelry on the side. The Goron Bracelet allows Link to pick up Bomb Flowers, which is pretty necessary in the coming castle. Head out of Goron City and go straight southwest until you come to a ledge containing a Goron, a sign, and a bomb flower. Hurl the explosive plant at the entrance to the cavern below you. If you hit it, go on down through the long tunnel. Getting the Bombs Blast open the dark brown wall to enter a lava-filled room with a giant Dodongo-head statue on the far wall. Equip your Hylian Shield (the wooden one is easily burned away in here) and jump on the moving platform in front of the dock. When it's up high enough, jump to the central platform -- watch out for the Beamos' laser eye -- and then to the right. Hurl a bomb flower at the Beamos over here, then at the dark brown wall behind it. Go in through the newly-revealed passageway. As you walk into the room, Baby Dodongo (plural) will jump out of the ground at you. Hit them with your sword, then run for it, because the explosion they make upon their death is enough to steal some hearts. You can get Golden Skulltula 50 in here. Head to the raised area at the end of the room. You are not heavy enough to hold the blue switch down, so drag one of the Armos statues onto it. In the next room, whip out your Slingshot and kill the Keese above the pots before they take flight. Before you pass through the door, you should re-equip your Kokiri Shield. In here, you'll battle two Lizalfoes. Navi gives the best instructions *gasp* : Keep them Z-targeted, don't lower your shield, and give them a nice taste of steel. Once the reptiles are toast, change back to the Hylian Shield, then go through the doorway and following hallway. In here, you'll find three Dodongo. Throw a bomb at them or hack at their tails with your sword. But watch out; their retaliation is mean -- they blow up just like the babies, and if you don't kill them in one blow, fire will come spewing out from the mouth. Your Deku Shield will be gone in a snap if you don't watch out. To escape the room, light the three unlit torches with a Deku Stick (a Deku Scrub is selling them behind the dark brown wall in the hallway, if you are fresh out). After going through the door, step on the switch on the floor to open a door on the far side of the room. Go through it. The Compass is in the room in front of the stairs if you feel the need for it (just bomb the Armos statue, then run from the explosion he creates). Place a bomb flower from the wall at the foot of the steps and watch the fireworks. Climb the incredibly steep stairs, then run to the left or the right to the top of the room to kill the Skulltula and Golden Skulltula 48 and 49 -- you can climb the wall they're on to get the token. Kill the Fire Keese (make sure you have your Hylian Sheld equipped) and push the Armos statue that is directly opposite of the door you came in out of the way (it's the only one that's not alive) to reveal a ladder. Climb the ladder and step on the switch you find. Go through the newly-opened door. You'll go across a bridge -- run to clear the gap in it. In the next room, watch out for the spikes running all over the place. Cross to the far side of the room and pull out the block to get a heart and access to the ladder. Uh-oh, the door is blocked. Climb on top of the block and hop to the nearest platform. A Bomb Flower is on top (and a small Treasure Chest). Throw the Bomb Flower at the blocked door. It will take a while to get the timing right, unless you're really lucky. Anyway, pass though the doorway once you have removed the obstacle. Shoot the golden eye switch above the door in the next room to get rid of the fire (for a limited time) to allows Link to cross to the other side. There are some more Lizalfoes in this room; get rid of them the same way. In the next room, you'll have another eye switch. Shoot it and jump one platform forward. Now shoot the eye switch to your left to get rid of the fire on the second platform (be quick!). In the next room you'll find a Treasure Chest containing a Bomb Bag. Whohoo! To the Boss After winning the Bombs, continue through the next door. Press the switch near the door from which you just emerged; this will make one of the pillars raise up to the second level, which is a lot easier access than climbing the Bomb-Flower steps! You'll see another bridge nearby. If you have lost your Deku Shield, cross the bridge and plant a Bomb at the base of the blocked doorway to get a new one. There are two holes in the bridge this time. Each one is right above one of the Dodongo Statue's eyes. If you remember the inscription you might have read earlier, the secret to proceeding in the castle is to make the Dodongo see red. So drop a bomb into each eye socket of the statue from the two holes on the bridge. Once you have done this, the mouth will open, leading to a new door. Jump down onto the statue's head and hop onto the center island where you can go into the belly of the beast, so to speak (though it's nothing like Jabu-Jabu . . . you'll see). Equip your Hylian Shield to avoid the Fire Keese in the next room; take the door to your right. You'll find more Fire Keese and Golden Skulltula 51 in here. Go forward as far as you can, then climb up onto the block and head to the left. Don't miss the fairy in the pot. Go through the passageway, kill the Fire Keese in here but don't step off the edge (this is the first room in the Dodongo's mouth again). Push the block off the edge, then hop down. Pull / push the block into the hole in the middle of the ground to trigger the switch that opens the door on the right. Pass through it and bomb open the dark spot in the ground, then open the chest to get a refill of Bombs. Hop down the hole. King Dodongo This guy is a joke, if you ask me. He's pretty large, but all you need to do is learn how to stay out of his way. You'll notice a sloped part of the ground between the main passageway around the room and the lava pit. If you stand there while he's rolling around, you'll avoid getting burned by the lava and avoid getting rolled over by the giant dinosaur. The way you defeat him is approach him as he lumbers up on the long stretches of the passageway and throw a Bomb (or Bomb Flower you'll find in the corner) in his mouth just as he's about to let forth a stream of fire -- but don't be too late or you'll get burned. He'll swallow the explosive and let forth a nasty hiccup. Run forward to slash him with your sword. Then stand on your handy out-of-the-way spot to avoid getting run over. He'll roll a full circle around the room, then you can repeat the process until he's dead. He will roll right into the lava where you can claim your Heart Container. Step into the blue light to be rewarded with a hearty clap on the shoulder from Darunia, the Spiritual Stone of Fire, and the threat of a Goron hug. As you pass back down the mountain, grab Golden Skulltula 40 and 41. |
