Hyrule Castle, Lon Lon Ranch, and Kakariko Village
Hyrule Field
From the Deku Tree, head west to the exit to Kokiri Forest. You'll find Saria on the bridge, get the Fairy Ocarina from her, then pass through the log to Hyrule Field. You're on short time, so read this before actually going into the field. You'll meet an irritating owl who follows you around the entire time you're a kid. After he's given his speech, you need to hightail it to Hyrule Castle Town. On your map in the field, you'll see an exit to the field in the far north. You need to point your yellow arrow (that's you) straight at that exit and run. You'll notice as you run, the sky will begin to darken. The gate to the Castle closes up at night and you really don't want to spend all your time waiting with the Stalchildren. Okay, go! If you reach the town before nighttime, great. If you reach the town just as the wolf howls, ride the drawbridge up for some rupees. If you reach the town after nightfall, hang out in the moat (since the Stalchildren don't like water) or fight them off for a couple of minutes until you hear the rooster. Here's the deal with time in this game: time flows normally in Hyrule Field, Lake Hylia, the river, Death Mountain, Hyrule Castle, Desert Colossus, and Gerudo Valley. Time stand still in Hyrule Town Market, Kakariko Village, the Graveyard, Kokiri Forest, the Lost Woods, Gerudo Fortress, or in any buildings. Nighttime lasts one or two minutes; daytime lasts three to five minutes. I've never actually cared enough to time it.

Hyrule Castle
Enter the town and you'll see a friendly guard beside you. If you go in the room near him, you'll find a perterbed guard who is in a room with LOTS of pots which nearly all contain rupees. Also here, you can get Golden Skulltula 19. In the town market, you will find (counterclockwise), the Bazaar, Potion Shop, stairs leading to the Temple of Time, the Happy Mask Shop, the road leading to Hyrule Castle, the Shooting Gallery, alleyway entrance, Bombachu Shop, other alleyway entrance, and a Game of Chance (which is only open at night). Talk to the red-headed girl, Malon, then head north to Hyrule Castle. Talk to the pesky owl again, then talk again to Malon, who is now standing by some vines. She'll give you a weird egg. Climb the middle vine by Malon, then hop down the south east side of the guardhouse (by the ladder and hole). This is rough going through here, so don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries. You'll see two guards on the road and several by the north side of the gatehouse. Walk sideways up the brown hill beside the road (not too close to the guards on the road and not too close to the guards on the gatehouse). If you did it right, you'll see a dirt path in front of you. Follow this for a while, going straight west (even when the path doesn't go straight west, you should). You will run into a wall. Just north of you, you'll see a rough place in the wall. Climb this and, sticking close to the west, hop off the north side of the platform and into the moat. Swim east and crawl out of the water at the corner. Go north and you'll find a sleeping man. Hopefully, morning will have broken at some point during this escapade and a chicken will have hatched from your egg. Hold the chicken up to the man, who turns out to be Malon's father, and he'll wake up. Talk to him twice to send him running home. Now move the milk carts south then west so they are stacked on top of each other. Hop up on the top one and jump for the waterfall. Crawl in the hole.

More Guards
Here is a series of guards patrolling around various objects (waterfalls, statues, you name it). Here are your basic rules for avoiding being caught: don't get too near them, stay out of their line of sight, use the bushes and other objects to hide, and don't be afraid to take your time. Once you're through it, go talk to Zelda. Random cool fact: check the window on your right for hanging portraits of the old school Mario crowd. You'll be led out of the castle and taught Zelda's Lullaby by Impa, who looks and acts distinctly cooler in this version of Zelda than any other.

Lon Lon Ranch
Once outside, head south for the structure in the middle of Hyrule Field, Lon Lon Ranch. Enter it in the daytime. Go in the first door on your left to play the Super Cucco game and be rewarded with a
Bottle containing milk. Now head south to the horse pen and talk to Malon inside. Pull out your Ocarina to learn Epona's Song. You'll see a door on the southwest perimeter of the ranch. Go in there and shift the boxes so you can reach the far left corner. Crawl through the hole you find to get a Piece of Heart #8. While at the Ranch, you can get Golden Skulltula 24, 25, and 26. You can get number 23 after you have the Boomerang.

Kakariko Village
Head east and north across the stream in Hyrule Field to Kakariko Village. As you walk in, grab the chicken by the front gate and head to the southern-most house. The woman in the back (outside) tells you she's lost her cucoos. You've already found one. Dump it in in the pen, then find the other five:

1. By the cucoo pen.
2. Holding a cucoo, soar from the uncompleted building to the ledge by the door of the Skulltula house.
3. Holding another cucoo, soar north from the windmill. Another cucoo is on the ground beyond the fence.
4. After getting #3, climb up the ladder and you'll find another bird behind the windmill.
5. In a crate by the northern-most house on the lowest level of the village.

You'll be rewarded with a
Bottle from the lady, who, as it turns out, is allergic to cucoos. Go figure as to why she owns any. Visit the cursed Skulltula family (for every 10 Golden Skulltula you kill up to fifty, you'll be rewarded by a family member; you'll receive your final reward after killing all 100 of the spiders). Go to the Death Mountain gate and talk to the guard. After he's done laughing at you, show him Zelda's Letter. He'll tell you wistfully that he wished he could get a Keaton Mask for his son and it would be really nice of you to do it for him since he gave you a great tip on buying a new shield.

Stuff to Do
Since it works to your advantage (and, unfortunately, your inconvenience) as well, go back to Hyrule Town Market, buy the
Hylian Shield (click for basic info and for operation strategies) for a 25 rupee discount and borrow the Keaton Mask from the Happy Mask shop. Give the Keaton Mask to the guard in Kakariko Village, then go back to the Happy Mask shop to borrow the Skull Mask. Now you need to go all the way back to Kokiri Forest and into the Lost Woods, the entrance being just above Mido's house. Turn left to visit the lonely skull kid. Sell the mask to him (you'll lose some money). For a full debriefing on this trading sequence, see the bottom of this page: Trading Sequences. Go back into the first part of the forest you were in and follow the music (if you get too close to a tunnel that has only a drum-beat playing, you're going the wrong way and will be spit back out into Kokiri Forest. You'll reach a place where a white circle is hanging from a tree. Shoot the center of it perfectly 3 times and you will receive an upgraded Deku Seed holder that can hold up to 40 seeds. Then hop down and stand on the smaller stump to play an ocarina memory game with two skull kids. If you get 3 wins, you'll score Piece of Heart #1. Keep wandering through the Lost Woods and you'll eventually reach the Sacred Grove. Kill the Wolfos (just keep him Z-Targeted and your shield up), then perform standard Deku Scrub procedure. You'll end up at the top of some stairs where Saria sits on a tree stump. She'll teach you Saria's Song. As you leave her hang out, you'll notice a ladder beyond the two Deku Scrubs by the stairs. If you climb up, you'll find a fairy fountain in a grotto in the ground. Jumping from top of wall to top of wall is also an effective way of leaving the grove. Head back to Hyrule Town market and borrow the Spooky Mask, then it's back over the stream and into Kakariko Village again.

Kakariko Graveyard
Head east from the cucoo lady's pen in Kokariko Village and you'll arrive in the Graveyard. If you've hit it at the correct time of night, you'll be able to play Dampe's game, where, if you're lucky, you can win
Piece of Heart 13. In any case, go to the very far end of the graveyard and you'll find a tomb bigger than all the others. Play Zelda's Lullaby on the Triforce symbol and the tombstone will be blown away to reveal a hole in the ground. Hop on in. Kill all the Keese with the weapon of your choice (Slingshot is probably the best), then proceed up the stairs. In here, you'll meet your first Re-Dead. Steer clear of these guys because you have little defense against them at this point. Run along the left side of the room (don't touch the water -- it's painful . . . probably something about the radioactive-green hue of it) and the Re-Dead will make a horrible screaming noise. You will find that you can't move. Just keep tapping buttons and keep running to the far side of the room and through the doorway. If you should actually get caught by the Re-Dead, here's what you can expect: the monster will stumble towards you and, if he gets close enough, jump on you and start sucking the life from you. It makes me wonder about dead people's sexual preferences . . . I don't know, maybe Re-Dead are just really ugly women. Anyway, just push buttons madly and, when he lets go, attack him with your sword. Stay behind him if at all possible -- it makes it less easy for him to perform his really devastating attack. Anyway, in the next room of the tomb, you'll learn the Sun's Song, which is really a great reward for going through all this. Back in the Re-Dead room, play your new tune to stun the baddies and run right past. Head through the Keese room again and back up into the Graveyard. By changing the time of day with Sun's Song to night, you can play Dampe's game; in the daytime you'll meet a creepy kid who likes to hang around the graveyard. You'll find him willing to buy your Spooky Mask (with correct change, for once).
