| Kokiri Forest and the Deku Tree |
| Starting Off After watching the EXTREMELY long introduction and being awoken by a perky fairy who will, unfortunately, follow you around the rest of the game, familiarize yourself with the controls, start menus, etc. Head out the door, talk to Saria, then climb down the ladder to speak to her less briefly. There's all sorts of money lying around the forest (under bushes, in the hedges, behind Mido's house, in the two far treasure chests in Mido's house, at the end of the bridge leading from Saria's roof, and at the end of the jumping stones near the shop) and start collecting it now because you'll need 40 rupees before long. Head east (check out the map in the bottom right corner of your screen) to the entranceway by the Deku Tree. You're stopped by Mido, who demands that you get a sword and shield before proceeding. Well, this is fine, because you'll be needing both. Getting a Sword and Shield Head west past your house and up the hill. Go south until you come to a boy trying to fight. Near him, you'll see a hole in the wall. Walk up to it until your Action Icon says "Enter" and crawl through. Just left of you is a massive boulder rolling in circles. Wait until it passes, then follow it at a run. Once you come to the opposite corner of where you started, duck to the right and you'll find a treasure chest. Inside is the Kokiri Sword. Check sword operations for all the nifty tricks one can do with swords. Press Start until you come to the "Equipment" page and equip the Kokiri Sword. Now I'm sure there's an easier (and by that I mean cheaper) way to get a shield, but money is very easy to come by and this shield is only 40 rupees. Go to the Kokiri Shop and buy the Deku Shield for 40 rupees, and be sure to equip it as well. Check out shield operations. Head back to Mido and say "Bite me!" to gain entrance to the Deku Tree. The Fairy Slingshot On the way to the Tree, you'll meet three Deku Babas. They're easy enough to kill, but they grow back so don't stick around long. Get the Deku Sticks they leave behind and head on to the Deku Tree. After your talk, enter his mouth. The Deku Baba in this room will lunge at you. If you kill them when they are upright, you'll get Deku Sticks, but if you kill them in mid-lunge, you'll get Deku Nuts. Climb the ladder or the wall Navi points out as being climb-able and turn right. Keep going until you reach a treasure chest that holds the Map. Keep going right and through the door. In here, it's standard Deku Scrub procedure: Z Target, hold down R until you bounce a spit wad back at him, then chase after him with your sword. The bit of advice he gives you is actually pretty helpful all through the game, so keep it in mind. Pass into the next room. Quickly jump on the platform and to the far side before it drops out from under you. Open the treasure chest and equip the Fairy Slingshot. See Targeting tips. To the Basement Turn around to face the door and shoot the ladder above it. Head back to the main room of the castle. Stop where you found the Map, shoot the Skulltula on the wall with your Slingshot and climb the wall. Drop onto the walkway on the right, ignore the Skulltula who drops from the ceiling, and go through the door. Step on the switch to your right and hop from platform to platform to get to the far wall before the timer runs out (if it goes out on you, you can climb the vines by the door to try again). This may take some practice, but you'll be spending a lot of time jumping around in this game, so get used to it. Open the chest. Now kill the Skulltula hanging down (get close to him and wait until his back is turned before firing a Deku Seed), go back to the switch, step on it again, and jump to the platform where he was hanging. You'll find a recovery heart and Gold Skulltula 1. Kill him with your sword or Slingshot for a token (the purpose for this will be explained later -- there are 100 of these guys in the entire game, and you want to get them all). To exit, light a Deku Stick with the lit torch and run to the unlit one to set it aflame. Put the stick away with Action Icon or pulling out some other item in order to save it from being burned up. Back in the main room, kill one of the hanging Skulltula and jump into the CENTER of the web below you on the main floor. You will break through it (if you did it correctly) and find yourself in Basement 1 in the water. To the Boss Kill Golden Skulltula 2 and 3 in here (killing them isn't enough -- you have to get the tokens, too) and stand on the switch on the platform with the torch. The switch will light the torch, which burns away the web, allowing you to open the chest. Burn the web on the other short platform with a burning Deku Stick -- stay in the shallow water -- and go through the door. Remember what this Deku Scrub tells you (2, 3, 1), then shoot the eye above the door with your Slingshot to pass on. Listen to Navi because she's actually helpful for once. Right under the rotating, spiky log, on the left wall, dive down to press a switch. Now race back to the original platform, hop onto the moving block, pass under the log, and jump to the far platform. What you just did by hitting the switch was lower the water level and allowing you to ride on the platform without getting impaled. Kill the hanging Skulltula, then push or pull the big block along the rut on the floor. Climb on top of the block from out of the rut and pass through the door. Light the two other torches in here and go into the next room. Kill the Skulltula before approaching him for a clear view at his vulnerable back. Do NOT go into the center of this room -- stay on the outside path -- unless you want a premature battle with the boss' babies. Light a Deku Stick and race around the outer path to the opposite side of the room and burn the web down the hill. Crawl through this hole. You're back in the first watery room. Don't jump off your platform yet -- push the block on the left off the ledge first. Jump across the torch, light a Deku Stick, then jump back on the newly-moved block and light the web on the floor by swinging your Deku Stick. Jump down the hole and into more water. There are hearts in the water, but I suggest waiting until you've fought these last three baddies before collecting them in case you use a heart you don't need. Head onto dry land and kill the Deku Scrubs in the order you were told: 2, 3, 1 (from the left). Stock up on hearts, then pass through the door to face Queen Gohma. The Boss of the Deku Tree: Queen Gohma For the first boss of the game, she's not too shabby. Use C to look up at the ceiling until Gohma spots you. She will jump onto the floor and start crawling after you. When here eye turns red, back up so she doesn't squash you and hit her eye with a Deku Seed from your Slingshot. She will be stunned for a moment. Perform as many Jump Attacks with your sword as you can, and, unless you're really freaking good, she'll retreat back up to the ceiling. Up there, she will lay some eggs, which hatch and attack you (while you're waiting for this lovely process, you can stock up on rupees, Deku Seeds, Hearts, etc. in the bushes around the perimeter of the room). Just swing your sword at the babies as they lunge (you can tell they're about to do so because their eye turns red), and once you have dispatched them, Gohma will come back down to attack you again. Repeat this process until victory is yours. And FYI, here's standard Ocarina of Time procedure for dead-bosses: grab the Heart Container, then step into the blue light to leave the castle or dungeon. |
