Whilst it is not clear whether long term complications in diabetics can be prevented, it is generally accepted that early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention will avert, or significantly retard the relentless progression of, these complications, even if one is unable to reverse them.

Long-Term Complications of Diabetes

Even people who control their diabetes well can experience complications.

Some complications that may arise include diabetic retinopathy; neuropathy; kidney failure; serious cardiovascular problems; increased foot, dental, and other infections; impotence; and pregnancy difficulties.

Damage to blood vessels is the main reason for complications to occur.

Poor circulation and damaged blood vessels lead to increased infections in your mouth, on your feet, and wherever you cut or scrape yourself.
