 High risk group

 

                              WHO ARE THE PERSONS 

                                        AT HIGH RISK FOR DIABETES.

 

 

Those with typical symptoms and signs.  

Polyuria (increased urination)

Polyphagia (increased appetite)  

Polydipsia.( excessive thirst)

Unexplained weight loss in spite of adequate food intake

Undue tiredness and fatigue.

Tingling or numbness in the extremities.

Burning feet.

Generalized pruritus. (excessive generalized itching).

Purities vulvae (itching vulvae region)

Infection in genital region. (balanitis)

Delayed wound healing.

Impotency.

Premature cataracts.( early onset cataract in eyes)

Visual disturbances.

 

Other people in high risk group are:

All persons with a positive family history of diabetes.  

All obese patients ,especially those with central (abdominal) obesity, waist-hip (w-h) ratio ,>0.95 in men and >0.85

In women, and /or a body  mass index (BMI) >25.

All adult patients with tuberculosis.

Patients with arteriosclerosis (clogging of arteries with plaques) and its complications, especially those with premature macro vascular disease. (angina, stroke).

All patients with high blood pressure and lipid abnormalities.

All women with bad obstetric history, recurrent abortions, those giving birth to large weight babies. 

Persons who are large weight babies; very low birth weight babies may also be at higher risk.

Persons who show an acute rise in blood glucose levels at time of physical (acute infections, trauma etc.) or mental stress.

Persons taking drugs which are known to increase blood glucose levels like steroids, oral contraceptives, beta blockers (a class of anti hypertensive) etc.
