La
risurrezione di Lazzaro - The Resurrection of Lazarus
(synopsis by Anthony Kamel)
The
narrator arrives and asks if he is in the right cemetery to witness
the miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus. The guardian of the
cemetery tells him that he is in the right place, but he also
tells him that he has to pay ten soldi to enter and assist in
the miracle. The narrator gets mad and the guardian of the cemetery
tells him that he can pay two soldi instead: he has to pay for
the ticket seeing as there will be a lot of people that will
ruin the cemetery and for this reason he needs some money to
be compensated for the annoyance. The narrator pays the two soldi
and enters. The guardian tells the others that they have to pay
and that their age does not matter: the miracle cannot be seen
for free.
The
narrator recalls the last time he went to see another miracle,
but that time he couldn t see anything because he was too far
away. For this he now looks for the tomb of Lazarus. He knows
the name of the one for which the miracle is being performed
but he is illiterate so he can t read it. He tries
to get in front of everyone; it does not matter to him if the
little ones can t see in front of him, they should have gotten
there early like he did! The women also begin to arrive and they
want to be the first ones in line. Later, all the spectators”
are in the cemetery but Jesus has not yet arrived and the people
are upset.
The
narrator asks the crowd if anyone knows Jesus so that he can
go find him and tell him that he is late. After the guardian
begins to sell chairs saying that he doesn t want the women to
get scared when they see Lazarus come back to life and fall to
the ground and hurt themselves. As for miracles, Jesus can only
do one at a time. Meanwhile, the guardian sells sardines to make
more money. Finally, the people see a group of people approaching.
Is that Jesus or not?”--everyone asks himself. Jesus arrives
with his apostles and his mother, all of his family members.
And
here, Jesus proceeds to remove the stone from the tomb, and the
spectators sense a terrible odor coming out of Lazarus tomb.
Did someone lie? They told Jesus that it had been only three
days since Lazarus died but it seems like it has been a month
judging by that stench! The narrator comments that Jesus may
not be able to carry out the miracle. The spectators begin to
make bets between who believes that Jesus will succeed in reviving
Lazarus and who doubts it. But Jesus succeeds in doing the miracle
and Lazarus is revived. Everyone admires Jesus skill but in the
final confusion, a woman s purse is stolen. The purse contained
the money from the bet.
