Il
matto e la morte - The Crazy Man and Death
(synopsis by Jose Martinez)
The
scene unfolds in an inn. The crazy man is sitting by the table,
contemplating the tarot cards. A couple of garbage collectors
introduce the play and explain that Jesus and the apostles are
at the inn for dinner.
The
crazy man has just finished playing cards but has lost. The last
card of the crazy man was that of Death, a white woman with black
eyes. At that moment, a woman enters. The garbage collectors
are afraid of her and leave. On the contrary, the crazy man doesn't
know what's happening. He sees a mysterious woman and offers
her a chair. The crazy man thinks that he has seen her before,
however, he eventually realizes that she is Death. The crazy
man tells her that she is very pale and Death asks him whether
he is afraid of her. The crazy man denies being afraid, but Death
sees that his leg is shaking. Hence, the crazy man says that
the leg doesn't shake because he is afraid, but because of the
fact that the leg used to belong to another man, being that he
had lost his during battle.
After
a short conversation between the crazy man and Death, he tries
to seduce her. Yet, when Death tells the crazy man that she has
not come for him, he has and outburst of happiness. Death becomes
very angry and accuses him of lying; just because of being afraid
of dying he told her many beautiful things, but then he is just
happy because he doesn't have to go with her. The crazy man responds
saying that he is happy, not because he is not going to die,
but because she decided to sit next to him; she didn t spend
time with him for her job, rather for she though that he was
nice. Accordingly, Death explains that she has come for Jesus,
who is destined to die at the cross.
The
crazy man wants to tell Jesus, but Death explains to him that
it is not worth it, since Jesus knows that his destiny is to
die in that way. Then the crazy man says that Jesus must be crazy
as well because he is happy, knowing that he will die. At the
end, the crazy man convinces Death to let go of her depressions
and spend at least an hour in his company, before completing
her task.
